Decided to head to the coast this weekend for some abuse since the forecast was for 2 to 4's on Saturday. Boy did they miss the forecast as it turned out to be a calm day. Bait was a little scarce but we managed to load up with pogies and headed to the parking lot at Lighthouse Rock about 12-15 mi off the beach. Had the first king in the boat within 10 minutes. I had a short strike on one of the rods so I put it in free spool hoping the fish would come back and he did and nailed it so I gave the rod to Jonathan so he could reel it in thinking it was a king and he had never caught one. Finally got the fish to the boat only to find out it was about a 40 pound Amberjack. Capt George gaffed it so we had the cat food on the boat since they tend to be wormy. I had carried my "virgin" jigging rod along so I decided to see if I could finally catch a fish with it so I put a king rig and pogie and let it out in the prop wash. Wasn’t in the water 10 minutes when a nice king hit it. I was happy to know that after a year and a half I was finally able to catch something with it. About 1 we just cut the motors off and light lined for kings picking up a couple. Late in the afternoon I had another short strike on the rod that was about 20 yards behind the boat. I put it in free spool again and peeled off line and the king came back and nailed it. The fish kept smoking the line off so I told George we were going to have to chase him down. As the line got close to the bottom of the spool he came unbuttoned so at least we didn't lose all the line. We fished till sundown and ended the day with 7 kings and 1 AJ(cat food). As you will note in the picture one of the kings took legs Saturday and hopped out of the cooler and walked off. It was the last fish we caught and the biggest which was around 30 lbs.
Jonathan with his AJ.
Whats left of the catch after one king walked off.
Nice sunset on the way in.![]()
