The 5 spring and summers I worked at the Marina, I went into the drink at least once a season. It was inevitable. Hard wind up Pelletier creek and the bow of the boats would blow over when I was putting them on the forks. The Grady's and the other boats with all the curtains were the worst for dunking you the canvas/isinglass were like sails even when you unzipped them to let the wind through. Whenever these conditions were present about every 6th time, you guessed it, slip slidin away! Always sucked to go in at low tide too. Nasty black creek mud.......smells like rotten boiled cabbage

Season before last i just pulled the mako into the West OC boat ramp after night fishing with my buddy. It was high tide but higher than nomal and there was about 6" of water covering the finger piers, it was dark. I was wearing a brand new type 4 inflatable vest that I wear in the summer 'cause it's cooler.
My buddy stays with the boat and off I go to get the truck/trailer arriving at the truck and throwing the new vest on the pass seat. After backing the trailer in I hop out and proceed down the flooded finger pier walking staight to the back of the boat and staight off the end of the pier! I popped right back up but the guy next to me was laughing his butt off! Once my buddy realized I was ok he cracked up too! I now never tell anybody TO TAKE A LONG WALK OFFA SHORT PIER! BEEN THERE DONE THAT! ![]() |

while everybody is sharing...I had a very scary experience Off of San Juan Puerto Rico back in 1996. My ship (Uss Laboon) was inport for 4 days so 6 of us decided to charter a boat out of San Juan. I think it was like a 36Bertram or something. It was a beautiful slick ass calm day and we had already released two Blues...I was up on the bridge with the captain resting after my turn in the chair just talking with him about fishing down in the caribean...anywho...I'm leaning on the side of the flying bridge when a rogue wave came out of nowhere....big roll on the boat and I"m over the side, bouncing off his Outrigger and splashing in the water. Now mind you, he's pulling all these big ass marlin lures with huge hooks trailing on them...The mate is yelling at me in Spanish and the captain is going crazy....they're trying to tell me to grab one of the teaser so they can pull me in....how the hell am I supposed to know where the teasers are verses the hook baits while I"m floating in the water !!!!!!......they got the boat turned and picked me back up with a very shaken captain and mate....making sure I"m ok and that I am not going to sue them for their boat or something....I assured them I was ok and wasn't going to sue or anything and that we would pay for the bent outrigger.....very embarrassing day...I had not even had a beer that day....that's my story of falling in the drink !.....Bob
