    And just for the record...

We stayed for the Cat 2; we left for the Cat 4. This is an untried house in that kind of storm. Plus we never got power back and would not have been fully-prepared here.

Next time with generator, we will stay unless ordered to do otherwise. We know the house better. We are 60' above sea level and have a hurricane shelter that is surrounded by poured concrete.

I'm not suggesting everyone flee at the moment a squall blows in. But it seems to me that EVERYONE knew Galveston was going to get slammed and that's why they were ordered to evacuate.

    What's the difference ?,

Manditory evacuations on shore or storm warnings posted for the coast. This isn't an argument it's fact.I've gone to go bail out a stupid sailboater that thought he could beat 30 footers on the way to Bermuda. Been there done that, it wasn't my call to go or not, I signed on. Again seriously ,what's the difference?Frank

    No Matter,

LaGringa it doesn't matter which side of the fence any of us is on this issue. I'm just glad that there are people out there that are willing to answer the call, when we find ourselves in a bind. No matter how foolish our thought process my have been. The first responders ,you gotta love them.Frank

exactly....and comparing a boats distress call to a Ordered Evacuation is like comparing apples to oranges, it ain't the same and before we start an argument about this, I was 5 years as a boatswain mate in the CG and was active on quite a few SAR calls in the 5th district.....boaters also make choices but the overall majority stay inshore when storm warnings are posted and the ones that are out there can run for a protective harbor.....but those that choose to sit in there beach front houses and watch as a 15'+ storm surge and 130+ mph winds buffer there glourious homes at the beach have a Death Wish.....

Oh man, me too...!!! And they've come to my aid on more than one occasion, believe me...!!! I've been very, very thankful for it.

I also knew some that died in the World Trade Center. It's the senseless stuff that gets me.

I totally agree why should anyone have to risk their lives at making a rescue attempt when these people were told to get out in advance. It's ignorant and extremely selfish not to mention just plain stupid.

There is no difference, they are both idiots and should not have put others lives at risk because of their stupidity and poor judgement.

You have to be careful in assuming your homeowners policy will cover your losses caused by a hurricane. Basic homeowners does not cover flood damage. You need flood insurance for that. "Some" insurance companies "might" agree that flooding caused by a storm surge was a result of wind and "may" cover you under homeowners. But then again many homeowners policies don't cover wind either...you need a wind & hail policy for that.

So if you're in a hurricane prone area, you need to realize that homeowners might not fully cover you.
