Joanee - Yellowfin Tuna Welcome Back Party...6-14-09
It has been a long wait since the our last Yellowfin bite but just like the past 2 years, mid June has been the time where we are seeing the return of the Yellowfin to our local canyons. Let's hope they stick around for a while this year.
Capt. John was kind enough to take us yesterday on the Joanee and the crew consisted of Geno, his son Jason, Capt. Scott of Playmaker Sportfishing, my Dad, and myself. With some decent water still hanging around the Spencer we decided that would probably be the best place to start. We started our troll on the 50 line inside the tip where we had about a 3 degree break. After quick deployment of the spread consisting of skirted ballyhoo and spreader bars it wasn't long until we had our first fish of the 2009 Canyon season in the box, about an 8 lb. Dolphin that we picked near a lobster ball. After that it was quiet until Chance called us in on a Yellowfin bite he had going on about 5 miles south of the canyon in 300 fathoms. Thanks for that call Capt. we will be sure to return the favor. Once we got there it was game on with many double, triple, and even a quad header. Most of the fish were small but we did managed to go 14 for 18 on Yellowfin to about 50 pounds and put 6 keepers in the box plus the Dolphin which made for plenty of meat to bring home. The warmest water we found all day was about 69 degrees and fairly blue in clarity. All lures in the spread got action from single green machines behind the bird, to sea witches and Ilanders with ballyhoo, to green machine spreader bars. A lot of our bites came right off the transom on the flat lines and short rigger baits.
Thanks again for the invite Capt. John and props to the crew for all the pretty work in the cockpit. It was a busy day in the pit to say the least.
Here is a quick video clip of some of the action we had yesterday. I'll try and see if I can edit a decent movie together of more action this week. Keep your eyes peeled to the bottom right of the video screen!
Looked like at least two more bites on the flatline in front of the hookbait. Very cool video and congrats on a nice trip! Thanks for sharing.
