We took advantage of the beautiful weather conditions yesterday and ran to the Wilmy with high hopes that something changed after the last blow and we could find some meat for the box. With a crew consisting of Capt. John, Bill, Brian, my Dad and myself we left Margate at 4:30 with calm seas and a nice easy ride through GE inlet (for a change). On our way out we talked to Capt. John on teh Hooked Up who had a decent Wahoo in the boat. Thanks for the info Capt. and I am looking forward to reading your report. Once we arrived at the tip we worked down the West side to our Captains favorite spot. Not soon after we got there the green machine spreader bar starts screaming and then comes unbuttoned. We are looking around and then there is whitey closing in on the right flat naked swimming ballyhoo. My Dad was on the rod and with a little drop back it was game on ! This being the first White Marlin for crew member Brian we gladly handed him the rod and watched him battle the fish for a 1/2 hour. Once boatside we unhooked and quickly brought him onboard for a few pics and then the clean release. Pretty work to all crew members as it was cool clam and collect in the pit at all times. After this we worked the area for a while and had no other shots. We did find a huge school of flipper dolphin crusing through and we trolled through them but there were no tuna to be had. We also seen a few schools of small skippies but that was it. We continued down the West side and across to the East and then back up to the tip and found nothing. Not even a Dolphin bite around any of the balls . Once back to the tip we worked back in through 50 and 40 fathoms and around the fleet of scallopers inside the 40 and only managed a Dolphin and a short quick bite on the planer set-up that mangled a ballyhoo.
I wish I had some good news for you guys about some meat fish showing up but I guess the wait will have to continue. We may try again tomorrow a lot closer to shore in the 20-30 fathom ranges (weather permitting) since the fishing in the canyon just plain sucks right now. So stand-by for an update on that. I also have some videos of the action yesterday that I will try to get up as soon as I can but bare with me as I am on vacation and only have limited access to this laptop computer.
I would also like to thank Box and Ron and Andy from the Sea Splendor for welcoming us to dinner with them last week as if we knew them guys for 20 years. Thanks again and I hope you guys have a great rest of the season!
Brian Hooked Up
Mcc, Brian and Bill with the White prior to release.
We found this 13 miles off GE. Possible research for the wind farm???
That rig you guys saw is cool. I always thought one of those would make a nice fishing vessel. You wanna move...just raise up the feet and go. Might run a few more bucks than the standard mothership.
Thanks for the pics.
