    JB Hollow core braid

Hi i have 130lb JB hollow core spooled on AVET 50 wide i would like to put a 50lb (0.69) fluorocarbon leader on . can i run this fluoro into the hollow for a chinese handcuff connection or is the fluoro too thin for this test braid...and is there any 'rule of thumb' to gauge which size mono fits into which size braid...thanks in advance

50 lb.leader is a little small but the proper method is to splice a loop at the end of the JB and then make your leader into a windon using dacron. Then you can loop to loop the two peices or catspaw a small swivel in the middle.

Do a search for forum member "offshore". He has a couple of videos and threads showing how to do it.

Also check out a "Basil". I forget his screen name but his website is:

He is also a resident guru on JB and windons

I use the thread bobbin but alot of people use floss and half hitches... then a little glue.

Yes, it is too thin, don't do it. You'll want to make a wind-on with the fluoro; use 80lb hollow spectra. Splice a loop into the main line and connect loop-to-loop.

What you can do however is splice 10 ft of 80 Lb onto the end of the 130 (100% connection) and then thread the 50 fluoro into it and please use a serving of some type. I make my own topshots and some for friends and started the half hitch method this year with the Line one glue, use 30lb JB solid spectra for a nice thin connection.

There are lots of ways you can do it, but my question is why would you spool a whole 50w with 130 braid and then only use 50lb floro as a topshot? Sounds like a waste of expensive braid to weaken the link down to 50lb.....I'd use at least 80, if not 100 and then you CAN finger trap and glue it. There are a lot of guys on here that are more knowledgeable with braid to floro connections than I am, but I just didn't know why you would have your whole spool at 130lb and the leader a measly 50lb....? I'd beef up the floro.

I really like the JB but always use windons because they are much easier to change out. One of the advantages of braid is to be able to spool a lot of yardage on a smaller reel. I hate fishing with 80s because we fish standup no chair. Spooling the 50ws and 30ws with 130jb hollowcore gives you the best of both worlds. Fishing where we do I agree with the others on the topshot or windons. You wont ever see anything less than 80lb for our windons. Windons or windon topshots here....Mark

I agree...........I have lost too many big fish on 50 lb so I finally said screw it and hardly ever touch anything less than 80lb. 130 hollow core is overkill for a lot of applications, but if you have a full spool of it on your 50wide then why the hell would you bring its overall strength down to 50lb? If you are fishing 130, then at least make your topshot 100lb mono, otherwise it is pointless to have a whole spool of 130. It is like having a solid steel chain with one of the links being a zip tie............ Just my two cents.
