James Joyce II report - Saturday 4/26

ok guys, sorry this is a bit slow but I have just got back to the puter after a whirlwind weekend. We are still in the middle of a lot of upgrades / improvements and we are trying to squeeze in as much fishing as possible in between portions of the project. Spent all day Friday working on the removal of the old radar and install of the new system - man is it gonna be sweet!!! Can't wait to get my other Navnet screen and then the rd30 repeater hooked up, then add in the new Simrad auto pilot - obviously I am a bit excited!!!!!

ok, back to business. We got back out there Saturday with a group of really fun folks - they were laughing and carrying on all day!! Nice run out and stopped just inshore of the 302 with lines in around 7:20. Still getting the spread set out and hear a pop, look and the short rigger is down and a decent gaffer is doing its thing. Minute or 2 later and meat hits the ice! Got it all back out and worked a bit but never marked much so headed on towards the rock. Just inshore of the SW corner started marking lots of bait, spun her around and came back thru there and BAM, there goes the planer rod! Dean's 13yo daughter gets the call and starts cranking him in - 45# hooski gets offered the cold ride home! Come back thru, "something" plays with the long bridge pole, then grabs it for a second or 2 and lets go, drop back - nothing, drop back a looooooonnnnggg time, still nothing, crank it in and it is all mashed up!! Hit it again, another peck on the long bridge line, another long drop and this time I could feel him peckin away at it, but still could not get him pinned up, and again it was all mouthed and mashed up. Last pass thru we have yet another fish charge in and pounce on the long bridge pole, peel off a few yards and then drop it - checked it and it was again mashed up. Yep, ole Troy is not too happy with himself at this point!!! Finally after all the turning and working the same area we got wrapped up with about 20-30 smaller boats and the boat was beginning to spread out and push down with each pass thru, so we moved on. Worked out to the Pan AM but found nothing. As I worked back towards the NE corner the planer takes another bounce and up comes another 35-40# hoo to join the ice box - a 13 yo boy got the opportunity to crank this one in. Worked a lot of the bait we were marking and then Herb spotted a little pc of lumber - started a hard turn to port and here he comes!!! Saw this fish lit up and charging from about 40 feet out, raced across into the spread, turned about 90 degrees and crashed the short rigger - man this was as pretty a bite as I have seen in a long time!!! He comes to the box and Herb puts the steel to another nice gaffer. After that the only other things we had were a bunch of short cut off bites on the planer rod and the other deep bait. We did pick up a small king on the sw corner earlier in the day - almost forgot. Anyways, lots of bites, 2 nice hoos, couple decent gaffers, a nice ride home and back thru the inlet around 4:30.

Good talking to a few folks out there Saturday! See ya again soon!

By the way - gotta say thanks to Capt Joe Shute and my new favorite wahoo bait he hooked me up with just in time for the weekend. We've been talking about it for a couple weeks - put it to work Saturday and it is awesome!!! The bossman got us 2 more Sunday!!!!
