Offshore has it right. small boats can use a heavier bait/lure/bird for their line long rigger bait. a second bait is added to the main line with just enough leader to cause that bait to barely touch the water. wish I had a drawing to illustrate it but maybe someone on here can explain it better than me. I can tell you that it awsome to see yellowfins airing out just off you gunnel going after this type of set up. Kind of like fishing those yummie flyers off a kite.

What do you guys recommend to pull for a 5 rod setup on a 21' boat? Pull more spreader bars and daisy chains to create a schooling effect?

    Nice thread here guys!

    jkelly,

I am not really sure what they pull down in your area, having never fishied there. Up here in the NE last year, if it was just my & my bro fishing, we would troll 5 rods which was easier to manage. From the riggers we would run our spreader bars with 4-9 inch squid depending. On the flat lines usually squid daisy chains, zuckers, zucker chains, bally/iilander combo. Center shotgun we would run green machine with a bird in front at variuos distances back. (but that never got any hits for us last year).

I liked to run the spread reel tight, everything tracking well and most of our knockdowns came off the flat lines. However, many times when things were slow for us opening up the spread too and experimenting with lures, positions and trolling speeds worked helped to bring some tuna in for us.

One thing I added this year to the boat was a few rod holder in the transom, mostly for added capacity. But one thing i want to try and experiment with is using the center one for trolling either really short or down with a drail for whoo????not sure yet guess ill have to see..any suggestions, here's a pic

It's called a dangler. Seen em used on the short riggers and they are cool to watch get hit...They are a royal pain in the ass, not to mention dangerous, when there are two tunas on the same line.

    Jumping squid

First post here, lots of hot blooded folks here so it feels right at home

Here's my 2 bits how to do the jumping squid. You need

-40' of leader material, 250# mono is good
-a 9" WHITE moldcraft squid with a 7/0 7982hs mustad on a 2' leader and a snap swivel at the end. Use a 2 oz egg sinker inside the squid to position the hook
    -a 12" b/w moldcraft smoker rigged to a 3' heavy mono, 400#
    -a 12" b/w moldcraft smoker rigged to a 5' heavy mono, 400#, 10/0 hook
    -a 3 way swivel
    -a barrrel swivel

Rig the 3way at the end of the 40' leader and attach the two smokers. Fish the rig from high up. Riggers are fine but whimpy riggers are not. T-top is fine. position the smokers on the 3rd or 4th wave. The dancing squid is on the 2nd and spends 50% of its time OUT of the water. After you test the rig out and you see where you need to attach the squid on the 40' leader, cut the leader there and crimp the barrel swivel, then attach the squid snap swivel to it when you deploy the rig.

There you have it, the jumping squid with all its majesty....if you use light tackle, loose the hook from the smoker.
