Wow what a fun weekend I had. I just got back from Islamorada. Went down for the weekend with high hopes of sailfish snappin, warm weather and cold margaritas. Well when I got there we were greeted with a nice cold front, still it was better than the 8 degrees back in Delaware.
I spoke with Captain Kevin Brown of Gold Reserve charters. He told me the bite was slow on the sailfish and the snook were scarce due to the cold temps. So we headed out Saturday into the back country to look for some snook. It was a slow day, and we managed a few speckled trout and some jacks. It was an awesome day on the water though. I got to take my father in law out for a much needed day on the water. He has had some serious health issues and Saturday was the first time he has been healthy enough to go fishing in 2 years. He had a great time and caught the biggest trout of the day. I was so glad I could get him back out on the water.
Sunday we were planning on going out after sailfish, but after hearing of the slow bite we opted to go out on one of Capt. Kevin's shark trips. It was a cool trip where the kids had a blast. They chum up all kinds of baitfish and let the kids have at it. It was non stop action for them. My daughter had a blast catching all kinds of jacks and pinfish. Her highlight though was releasing a 300# nurse shark. It was awesome watching my 8 year old daughter beat up on that big nurse shark.
The trip was not as we had planned, but sometimes they are the best ones. It was awesome just spending time out on the water with family, catching fish was a bonus. If you are ever down in Islamorada I would highly recommend booking the Gold Reserve. They are a first class operation that catches fish.
