Try shooting over to Isla Mujeres next time. Little bigger boat variety than the panga fleet. I'm sure you found plenty other island activities to make up for the winds......

SHOE,
I guess one of the last secret places close by is out. my family and i went there about 10-15 years ago on a spring break trip. i was about 12-14 years old at the time. we did the whole travel across the yucatan trip stopping in several places, but when we got to isla hobox we stayed longer than anticipated. dad made a deal with the ferry captain to put the rental car on the ferry and off we went. well, when we got there there wasn;t very far to drive as we soon found out. we fished around the ferry docks and watched the commercial guys throw the enormous groupers on the beach as they came in in the late morning. i remember we were fishing for speckled trout by the ferry dock with hand lines, while my brother was the only one with a rod. he was about 7-9 years old at the time when we saw a huge tarpon like you described, roll and then the rod proceeded to fly through the air and across the water. the locals, all fishing the same as we were(with hand lines) all jumped in their boats and started dragging their wreck anchors trying to find the fishing rod. the people were really friendly. i hope to get back sometime soon before it changes any more than it probably already has. i remember all three of us kids playing soccer with the local kids in the enter of town. it was a cool place. thanks for bringing back those memories.

Wow. Looks like a great trip. I went to Isla Mujeres this year for the first time and we caught 45 sails in two days. It was unreal. That was my first time fishing in Mexico, and I will be back.

Shoe,

yuo are my hero. hey biscoto, thanks for the invite, when Shoe gets his life together we will come down, definitely by plane this time, unless we are bringing all our worldly belongings to stay a while, which is quite possible.
