Im interested to see what yoru thoughts are on this matter
I have been fishing the canyon's of the north east for 8 years now. I have heard of this never seen it. I guess its more popual in the 100 square of the hudson. A place I have never been. Im up in block canyon fishing on the 100 fathom line. I was reading a book last night on tuna fishing. It says that when you tie up to a lobster pot Yea i no its against the law to do so. But is you tie up to a pot its pulls the pots off the sea floor. What they where saying in the book was that the lobstermen say if there is not enough scope this will happen. What some lobstermen have done was leave 200 feet of rope hanging off the pot to tie up to. I was under the impression they did that to get it hung up in the wheels. What are your thoughts? Are there any ex lobstermen on here that could give me some insite.

Banned Camp - I am on PROBATION!!
There has always been a huge problem with this situation up here in the NE canyons.. The hudson is a minor problem but the entire 100line is the main line for the lobsterman up here. They run from the tip of the hudson and north to the southern end all the way thru the toms, hendricks, spencer, lindenkohl and so on..
This is their lively hood as you would not like someone to come into your slip at your marina and tie up for the night if you needed to get into it. Same scenario..
You can drag them no matter what size boat depending on sea conditions.. they DO NOT put the extra rope out for us to tie up to.. i have been the one to be totally AGAINST tieing up and i feel if you can not anchor then drift! you will fair just as well.
These lobsterman have been dealing with this daily and they are totally freaking every single time this season comes into effect. They have also been seen out there.. and trust me.. YOU CAN NOT DIAL 911 from out there..
The simple solution is to not do it.. the premier boats, captains, and fisherman in the area WILL NOT tie off to them at all.
Talk to anyone and they all anchor since you can find your own bait and not rely on some tuna finding you.. instead you find the bait and anchor on top of them and BAMM!! your into some tuna..
The logistics of the extra rope as i know it would be to get stuck in the wheel.. you screw with them and they will come right back at you.. Also i have seen friends out there try to do it and have razor edges filed onto a side or two of the high flier and WHAM there is a nice slice in your hand....
If you want to go near them for mahi they is cool and all but tieing up to them at night is a BIG NO NO in my eyes...
I would want someone stealing my crab pots out of the barnegat bay so i would even think about messing with someone elses gear!
Thats how i feel about it! and be wear.. the captains know where their pots are and they are searching their pc and radar all night and can see you from miles away before you see him..
not worth the headache and hassle.

Sit down Shut up And fish

I use to work lobster boats out of Glouster MA. To any your question in a word YES that is exactly why we/they leave rope hanging from the pot. We used to tie the rope just under the surface to make sure the boats did not see it and was garanteed to hang up in the wheels. Not something I am proud of doing but it was either do what I was told or lose my job.....a easy decision for me.

Women love me... fish fear me
I have to agree with Vinny here, we fish anywhere from the lindenkohl to the baltimore and its a big no-no, unfortunatly its also pretty common and the capt's that do it regularly are pretty much well known for it as well as disliked for it. I have actually been on a few charters that did tie off to one, although the pots he tied off to were from the boat he slipped next to and they had an agreement worked out according to him anyway. Just for the record when we did tie off we killed them...dont know if it was a coincidence or not but dragging some mans gear and livlyhood around the canyon is a pretty shitty thing to do.

I think Admin is going to let me have this space
Just a question from a kid with no canyon experience what so ever, but this site is for asking questions right? Well anyways, how come captains that frequent the canyons a lot that always go to the same spot don't bring something that they can drop to the bottom, kind of like a mooring, so it is there everytime for them? Would it cost to much money? Just trying to learn here, sorry if it is a stupid question.

Where I grew up messing with the pots was a quick way to get shot or at the very least, get your hands gashed open by blades in the ropes.
Dont mess with a mans money .... esp. a lobsta man.

Well first off the dragers dont care about lobster gear either. So what ever I drop down they will get. Plus You pick a pot closest to where there is gear. Im not going to the same pot every trip. there might be water in the dip im there 100 square west atlantis what ever. I hope you catch my drift.
