BOX, I think we can blame the lack of math skills on calculators and computers.
When I was in school we had to do "mental arithmatic"
No calc of even pencil and paper. It was good training.
Now I can get almost all the way thru the 3x table without making a mistake

My wife doesn't eat red meat, I'm amazed at the results we have got when ordering a cheeseburger no meat. The best was a dry bun and running close for second was a wrapped pattie. They just don't get it!!!

I hate them darn pickles too. I know it is better that they are working than on the gov't dole, but just think what these kids / people could accomplish if they just acted like they wanted to work. It is the old 80/20 rule. 80% of what we accomplish in life is showing up and trying. The other 20% is luck (where preparation meets opportunity).

A little late into this post, but I can give another example of horrific math skills.

I stopped at Bojangles in Vanceboro on my way back from the beach and watched and listened to the girl running the register. She allegedy hit the wrong button and the machine did not display the amount of change to be given. This occurred twice within 3 minutes. The first time, she had to ask for help for a $4.08 bill and was given a $5.00. The next time it was a tough one. The bill was $5.80 but she was given a $10. I was alomst embarrased for her.

true McDonalds story.....drive thru for breakfast.....order 1 Sausage McGriddle....drive to pay/cashier window and pay.... then drive to pickup window....ask for 1 strawberry jam packet.....drive off.....get to office.....Julio gave me ketchup packets...no jam......grrrrrrr

following week same McDonalds...this time order Egg McMuffin.....drive to pay/cashier window and pay....then drive to pick up window....this time ask for ketchup packet....same Julio...this time he gives me stawberry jam....i just laugh....

couple weeks later same McDonalds.....(6:15 AM)....order...total comes to $5.46.......drive to pay/cashier window....its JULIO......i just shake my head and laugh......i give Julio $10.50......(a $10 bill and 2 quarters)...JULIO smiles at me .....gives me back...not $5.04 but $50.04 ($50 bill and 4 pennies).....Julio tells me....."Amigo i got all right for you today.....me make no more mistake"........

so yes i did test him....i asked Julio.....can you make change for me.......i take another ($10 bill) out of wallet...ask Julio for 2-$5 bills or a $5 and 5-$1.......well Julio gave me 2 more $50 bills.....

lets see.....total paid to Julio.... $20.50
money received form Julio.....$150.04

yup Julio still has his job...he works the pickup window.....and still gets the condiments wrong...im just waiting for the morning he is again working the pay/cashier window....
thinkin next time i will ask Julio for change for a $20 bill.......figuring i will get back 4 ($50 bills).....
