    Ilanders for Wahoo

    Hi Guys

Wondering if anyone has a good trick for me - i have been reapeated short striked on my ballyhoos (with ilanders) and want to try and get the hook further back in the hoo but everytime i try feeding the hoo further up the hook shank i seem to damage it and it washes out a whole heap sooner.

I once saw a guy using wire leaders with long shanked hooks. he would use a baiting needle to pull the wire through from the anal hole and out the mouth, pulling all the wire through with it until the hook, then feeding the ilander on after it. Problem is i can't remember then how he connected the head of the hoo to the wire/hook. surely he didn't pull the wire pin through as well?

Dumb question i know but any advice would be much appreciated.

    Cheers guys

Hi there fountain of all fishing knowledge

Locale is Cayman islands, trolling speed is 6-8knots, spread is normally 3 b/w ilanders with bally along with one deep diver (mann stretch or yozuri bonita) and sometime a long runner wwwb. Almost all my decent fish have come on the ballys but i get bitten short 3-4 times for each hook up! its getting ridiculous and i really need to get the hooks further back?

    Thanks for the help

When dragging ballys (horse) I like to run a stinger hook (I only use singles, usually a 10/0 regular J) on a short piece of 400# cable. I dont run the cable of the stinger inside the bally. The cable has a 200 pound swivel and that is joined to the eye of the wire holding the first hook. I will try to find a pic of a rigged ballyhoo this way.

I would be willing to bet that if you try to run the hook farther back in the ballyhoo you may lose the lil wiggle in the tail that gets the bait to swim while under troll.

I have used ilanders for wahoo with some success. I run it deep on the planer or trolling weight or as the bait that is the farthest from the boat. Black and purple, and purple and chartruese are the colors that worked for me this past fall on the ones I caught on ilanders. When using an ilander in this situation, I try to pick the biggest ballyhoos in the pack to go on the hook.

I do trim the hair all the way out in the inside and trim the outside hair where it is only 5-7" long. I want most of the bait to be seen and also I don't want any of the hair to tangle on the tip of the hook. A wahoo will usually eat a bait whole all at once hence the need for wire. Sometimes he will slash and return for the scraps. This also helps to have wire in this situatin. If mono is used....most of the time a cutoff IMO is because he eats the bait whole and ends up clipping the mono just in front of the bait as his jaws slam shut.

We catch our fair share of wahoo on islanders and occasionally have a short strike, but more often than not, if you'll drop it back and let it run for a 20 count or so, the 'hoo will clean up the scraps and get the hook.

Doesn't always work, but often enough to not get lazy in the pit...

Heres a thought, you could always do a cheater pin. THats just sliding a crimp on the leader and bending a piece of heavy single strand (60# and up would work) and then crimp it in place where you want it. Then use a rubberband, spring, or bait latch to keep it in place.

Or if your using single strand, bend the wire tab (pin) down flat, throw a piece of tape over it (if your worried about tearing gut) and pull through anal, then bend back to 90 degrees.
Sorry, I looked, and cant find a pic of how I rig horse ballyhoo. Its not a terribly uncommon rig, just cant seem to find a pic. If no one has posted when I leave, I will try to take a pic later tonight.

I am sure Box or some of the others will have better tips. Catchem up!

Tournament Cable has AWESOME double hook bally rigs. I run 'em naked, not with an Ilander. Maybe you could jerry rig them to work with an Ilander, don't know, but Mr. Richardson pops up on here every now & then. I'm sure he could shed some light, if you PM'd him.

This is a common problem trolling Bally's...Wahoo love to slice and dice...And one can only rig a hook so far back on a Bally....Drop back tech. does work at times but not all the time.

My suggestion....Instead of using Ballyhoo, add a double skirt or octopus skirt with a 2 oz egg sinker jammed on the inside...glue it...Place it between the hair lure and a 0 degree double hook rig...Bottom hook's point should just touch skirts end...top hooks point should just touch hairs end...You will eliminate any short strikes with this rigging.

Check out Melton's Tackle for rigging as described...
