Austin,
Nice to see a young fellow thinking and contributing.
About that "thru the vent" trick. Running wire up through a ballyhoo's narrow digestive system is not easy. Also, if this system is used, the bait has to be secured up top so that it doesn't slide down the leader and have a lot of bad things happen, including spinning.
We use this style of leader for whole mackerel and bluefish baits used for trolling sharks. Heavy shark leader wire runs up the larger digestive systems of the bigger, thicker baitfish quite easily. It would be a much tougher deal with the thin, narrow ballyhoo.
Again, though, good to see a young angler thinking and experimenting. Keep up the good work!
