I Swear This Is My Last Reel ?

Alright guys, you have helped me determine that I must obtain new equipment since I am going to start targeting larger gamefish. You all have told me to tackle the tuna mahi etc standard 30's or 50's will do the trick. Now, should I buy 3 30's and 3 50's or could I just buy all 30's since I am fishing a 21 ft boat and will not be in marlin territory a whole not(hence the ? if I need the 50's). 2nd, should I buy graphite or machined gold reels. Any advice on maintance and durability of one or the other. I am trying to reason spending the extra dough for the golds and if I really need them. On the other hand I dont wanna try and save some $ and buy the graphites when the gold reels will hold up alot longer and be a better reel .What would you guys buy and why?

IF YOU DONT PLAN ON BEING IN MARLIN COUNTRY...THEN YOU WILL NOT BE IN TUNA, WAHOO TERRITORY...........SO THAT BEING.........YOU WILL NOT NEED THE 50'S

BUY THE 30 HIGH SPEED TYRNOS SHIMANO....GREAT KING...GREAT SAILDOG...BOTTOM....AND IF YOU DO GET BRAVE ON A CALM MORN....THEY WILL HANDLE THE BIG ROCK

I just got 2 to try out...LOVE THEM!!

If you are trolling 30's and 50's, the big fish is gonna hit the 30. It always happens biggest fish likes the smallest rod...

i am starting to like the graphite models due to the weight factor. i don't see where you will have a problem with them. you can always spool the 30's with 50 mono and the 50's with 80 mono. that is what is nice about the wide models. have kind of converted over to a shimano man after dealing with the tiagra on the planer rod. penns just seem to have a rougher feel to them and the shimanos are just smooth as silk.

With the exception of deep (planer) baits, Shimano tld 25's will handle most of what you'll encounter offshore. Plenty of big fish have fallen to small, nimble boats with light tackle.
    Good luck,

I'm looking at buying some offshore reels before the spring fishing heats up. Right now I am leaning towards the tld-25s for starters, maybe with one or two bigger set-ups for DFA planer set-ups.

Lever drags are great! If money is not a factor ,go with the gold. They'll last But if money is a factor.... You might want to consider some senators. I've caught a load of fish on senators 6/0 and 9/0's not a lever drag but they also last.... I use them for planer reels, kite reels etc....... They're cheap and hold up well.

For Carolina fishing a TLD 25 is alot of fun with Gaffer dolphin or typical NC yellowfin. I"ve caught many a good size Wahoo on my old Penn Formula 30's as well.
When it comes to 50's my preference is metal and they will last a life time. My all time favorite reel is my Tiagra 50 narrow. I only have one now but will be adding 2 more. to use as my long rigger set and shot gun rod. With over 800 yds of 80 lb Spectra-- and no wobble going stand up, it's the perfect Yellowfin/Wahoo set up for me.
What ever you do, plan ahead and make sets of your equipment--- rods and reels. Plan out long rigger rods, short rigger rods, and flat line rods. They should match (left & right) and compliment each other. I get tickled when I see 7 ft dink rods on the flat lines w/ TLDs and 5 1/2 ft Tuna sticks being used on the long riggers--- oh, never mind, that was me a few year's ago
