Thats what I am thinking fishing from a center console the golds might be a little heavy fishing standup but then again the 30's dont weigh that much.

Oh, you don't need the gold. The Tld 2speed is a fine reel. I've caught blue-fin, wahoo and whites on them. I'm now slowly going gold and shopping for a bigger boat. Since you asked the question You just need to decide if your going to remain happy with the tld's. If not go gold and you'll save money in the long run. I've got a shed full of combo's I cant bring myself to sell.
if you are looking for a "lightweight" setup look at reels in the 35-42oz range that fit your budget..some of the Heavy reels weigh..50+ or more ounces, thats like holding a extra 16+oz sinkes when fighting a fish..also for a "lighter" setup..a Uni-butt weight alot more than the other options avail to keep the weight down ..there are some good ways to keep the outfit light..even different blanks make a rod light..and the way it is setup and balanced..
I saw an article recently about this question but I just looked real quick and could not find it. It seemed the biggest difference is that the graphite was really geared according to the max drag pressure and line that was expected to be put on the reel. As in, you cant take a TLD 25 and load it with 150 lb spectra and crank the drag to the max and expect the reel to hold together under a giant. I'm looking at the new (higher drag) metal 50 series reels and I expect to load it with 150 braid for a planer rod. The tolerances between spool and sideplate is finer on the metals and you can crank the metals up to 45 lb of drag and expect them to hold together. Hope I explained that correctly. Enjoying the thread. Thanks
Keep the ideas coming guys. I am learning a ton of useful info that I did not know. I am used to fishing lightweight king reels and a little new to going after the big boys on my own boat. Thanks again
There is a level between the TLD's and the Tiagras. They are called Tyrnos. I just got 2 to try and love them. Oh course I have been running TLD's with no complaints. Have a look at the tyrnos though.
Just trying to confuse you somemore!!![]()
This is a good thread with a lot of good thoughts. If it were me, and money wasn't an issue, there is no question that I would go with the tiagras. You will not go wrong with the tld's, but the tiagras are on a whole different level.
Another thing to think about is what you will be putting them on. It always bugs me to see $600 reels on $80 rods. You won't get the performace that you are looking for. While you're thinking about expense, it makes sense to look at the rods as well before youk make your decision. If getting good rods means that your price range is closer to the tld's, I think you'll be happier than getting the tiagras and putting them on broom sticks. You can also look at getting cusom rods done as well and really personalizing them. Then you'll have gear that really means something to you.
Shoe
Good point Shoe! At some point the cost of the rod will come into play. There are great comments here from some experienced offshore guys. Personally, I have a mix between the two styles. I added a couple of TLD25s last season to go along with my Penns. My favorite setups are my 30 wides with 50lb line. I just love those things. All my Penns are serviced each year and my son (6 years old) will probably have them when he starts fishing offshore. My suggestion go with some TLDs and add a Gold reel once a year or so if that's the way that you want to go. You can't go wrong with the Tiagra or the Internationals. I think that weight may be an issue for some stand up fishermen, but with the use of belts and such - equipment takes that out of the equation, IMO. If you have any doubts, take John Rogers with you fishing one day. The reel could be 50lbs, as long as there was a fish hooked up on it you would never see him struggling!Good luck with your choice either way. To sum it up - most guys go with a mix, that way you're always prepared.
Will
Okay guys, to answer your ? about the rods, I have already purchased the rods I will be putting the reels on. They are Okuma Tailwalker 6 ft rods rated at 40-100lbs stand rods with all aftco rollers. The rods run about 189.00 a rod but I was able to get a pretty good deal on those. This is why I am asking the question about the reels. Ruggerdude gave me some good advice. If you guys dont mind me posting later tonite or tomorrow I will price what I can buy 5 Okuma graphite Titus vs 5 Okuma Titus Gold reels for and maybe you can help me decide which to go with. If the golds arent a whole lot more I might go ahead with them but will let you all know the price difference as soon as I know. Thanks
I would go with the gold just for the fact you may grow in to a larger boat later in life with a bigger boat payment, you may not be ale to afford to get gold reels when you really need them. I began buying my gold rods and reels before i even owned a boat just for the fact so when i got my boat i already had a good supply of fishing gear.
