On the mullet if they are on top and cruising I try to start pulling the net the moment it hits the water. I don't like letting it sink. If you let the net sink the mullet will swim under it like you said. When the net hits the water the mullet start down. If you immediately pull back the net as it hits the net closes in and down. I think this action makes the mullets swim back up or startles them just enough to get the net around them good. Again this is only if they are on top cruising.
I have a 6' radius net. Do not know the brand but it is blue and I got it at wal-mart for $25.
Congrats man Im jealous I need to get on the water so bad even if its just catching bait. It must rock being surrounded by all that water. When I was active I was surrounded by Oklahoma. Any way on the other post you mentioned you had the good boat with e-tecs(I think) reserved is that at the local marina or does Unkie Sam have boats you can play with? That would be way too cool!!!!
