ok i just went to a small creek in southwest michigan by where i live and for some reason 2 big coho's were in that creek, noew can i expect the salmon to come in that little creek in bigger #'s? or is this just a fluke (or retarded salmon?)
Salmon spawn in the streams creeks and rivers all around the Great Lakes. You should see the salmon river in NY during the spawn there are kings everywhere. Its not unusual to see salmonoids including steelhead and laketrout as well in some really small streams and creeks. Trout Run outside of Erie PA is a major spawning run and you can step over it in most places. About this time of year it will be black with all of the 2' long fish swimming upstream through 6" of water.
The route highlighted is around 12-13 miles by road maybe a mile or two longer if you follow the creek. This is Elk Creek very heavily fished for lake trout and steelhead. The pool in Mckean always has fish in it during the run. They run quite a bit further upstream than this as well but Ive never fished it.
Im sure the fish have been in your stream before or maybe they are new and their normal spawning run was destroyed.
