Are they related to the snaggle tooth hippo you encountered while seashell hunting? Remember the one that swam out to the Grady and nearly ate poneytail? Where is that seashell video?

But honestly,I would think it a "snare" more than a hook.

Maybe some kind of small animal trap. Dig a hole in the ground. put some bait in the hole. A rabbit or squirrel comes along and sticks its paw into the hole to get the bait and then can't get their paw out because the bone sticks into the animals leg or paw. Best I can come up with.

We use to do that with a 4x4 and a nail. We would drill a 1 inch hole in a 4x4 and put some dog food in it. Then we would drive a nail in the hole as an angle. Raccons would come and try to get the food. They would get stuck to the 4x4. 4x4 would be tied to a tree. We would then call animal control to come get the coons.
