Left the dock on Fri after work and headed out to the deep. We went to the 100 square as there was word of a great big eye bite going on in the area. (My friend Dave O hooked up with a couple the day before 150 and 225 lb and was on board with us for another shot at it) It was like a parking lot out there so we decided to set up in the deep away from all the other boats and drift for the night. We put lines in around 10:30 and after only a few min... we had a small sword in the boat. Released to grow up and be caught another day.
The night was pretty slow with only one small mahi coming over the rails. We did have a run off that just about dumped a 50 wide in about 45 seconds... but as soon as we had all the lines cleared and the boat started.... it came unbuttoned.
Crack of dawn we were up on the troll... along with 100s of other boats working the area... the big eyes continued to chew... just not for us. We got covered up with small yellowfins but that was all we could come up with. We got called over to an area where a friend hooked up with a couple of eyeballs (thanks Mike) but it just wasn't in the cards for us that day.
We decided to put some meat in the box and ran over to the west wall for some tiles. We got 5 small golden tiles and put our spread back out to work our way back to the tip and head for the barn.
About 20 min after we were back up on the troll.... BILL IN THE SPREAD!!!!!!!!!! I jumped down from the helm and dropped back a hoo with a blue and white sea witch that Marty gave me at his rigging seminar last year.... he picked up my offering and was off to the races. Holy crap!!! This guy had some sholders on him and made quick work of dumping my TLD 30 while the other lines were cleared.
My friend Dan "Skinny Drifter Charters" took over at the helm for me and proceeded to do a great job at setting me up to get some line back on the reel.
The battle went on for about 30 min untill he went ballistic and started greyhounding off into the sunset. We got a big belly in the line and I made a typical rookie mistake and didn't lighten up on the drag.... SNAP!!!! Damn it. I really wanted that fish for some boat side snapshots. My crew seems to think that the fish was around 350-400 lbs... I have no idea, but I know he/she was big.
I always get a bunch of crap for staying at the helm and not fishing when were offshore.... well my crew saw what it takes to get my fat ass out of the helm seat... billfish!!! I am a rookie at best but this is what I live for... if that doesn't get your blood flowing you must be dead. I was on that rod before anybody else on the boat could even react...
Thanks Marty for all that you have shared with me on what to do.... I'm sure I would have never been able to come tight on this fish if it wasn't for you and Bobby sharing all of your years worth of information.
Also a big thanks to everyone on the boat. Stephanie, Dan, Dave, "Little" Joe, and Frankie fish... One of my best friends and my "First Mate" Jeff couldn't make it due to family stuff, and was sorely missed. (we will get out there again soon)
Here are some pictures of our trip.
