    Hudson Canyon 8.27-8.28 Bigeye

Friday started out with 88 mile run back from the last port of my vacation (Port Jefferson NY to Keyport NJ). We had a great time on a two week, multi port trip.

We unloaded all of the vacation type crap from the boat and loaded up all the offshore gear, filled up with fuel, a quick check of the engine room and off we went to the Hudson Canyon at about 2pm. We had a great ride out with a small following sea.

We dropped lines in at the tip and trolled down the west wall looking for some warmer water. There was a ton of life at the tip so we spent a little time there and heard of two 50 lb class Yellowfin being caught as well as a raised white. It was getting dark and there wasn’t much drift at the time so we decided to drift the west wall for the night.
I set up the radar… cranked up the A/C and went in the cabin for some much needed sleep (the last night on vacation was a doosy)

The guys fished all night and I went back out at around 3am. They had a couple of nice run offs and had a few fish on but nothing in the box. They did have one 50lb class fish up to the boat only to lose it in the props. Just before dawn, we caught a mako around 50 lbs, but that was it for our chunking efforts.

Up on the troll at first light a friend of mine called me on the radio telling me that he was into nonstop YFT in the 50-80lb class and that they had all that they could fit in the boxes and they were heading home. They were low on ice so we trolled our way east to meet up with them to give them some. On the way over we caught two YFT with one going in the box and the other one was let loose to grow a little. We also had a Skippy and again saw tons of life.

About 5 min after the ice drop we came tight on a nice size fish which ended up being a nice size big eye.

The wind was getting worse by the second, so with plenty of meat in the box we decided to head for the barn. We took it on the chin for the first 30 miles or so but it calmed down nicely after that.
