Is the slowest that you can troll a bally? Any ideas on the best way to rig a bait for a dead crawl? Split bill maybe? Any special ways beyond the norm that can be shared?
Thanks for the help,
Shoe
you will get a mass amount of responses from this but i like to use a small amount of weight with the ballyhoo at a slow troll and i can bring it down to about 3-4kts if need be..
they swim nice and yes i will normall split billthem..
marty will be able to help you much further with a video i am sure..
Do drifter bites count? I don't mean it sarcastically, but think how often you have another long rigger bite when that bait is just sinking/drifting back there while you catch another fish. I think they like it falling down into that zone...especially if you are on top of the fish.
I would agree that split bill would be nice at slow speeds (but i'm partial), but would think naked or seawich would work well too. I'd stay away from lures such as Islanders, etc.

A slightly weighted ballyhoo or a split bill will swim like a mother at 3-4 knots. If going with the current, if there is any, you can bump in and out of gear to maintain your "good" speed it will rise and fall slightly swimming the whole time just as well. Be ready for that strike when going back in gear as it runs away from the bigger fish hunting it down.
No expert here but my first BFT was setting a WWB line with a blue and white witch/bally. Burned the hell out of my thumb...my best guess is the bait had very little forward motion kinda a free fall with a little tension from my thumb.
