How to Rig a.......
just got back from stomping around in the creek behind the office, cast net in hand and minnow trap set. now here at sportfishermen dot com we are blessed to have some of the best bait riggers around share their tips with us. thru this site i have watched martys videos on how to rig a ballyhoo every which way but loose, jimmyk's spanish rigging vids, and many other quality productions.
but.....i have yet to see many people talk about how to rig a......

i constantly hear about guys pulling them split tailed, etc. they are plentiful and easy to catch in most places and everything eats them. maybe its a secret thing, i dont know. anyone care to expound???

Matt, I can tell you that they make a dandy teaser. Rig them with the first three as droppers on progressivley shorter leaders about 2' going down to 1', last two in line, 200# mono. Rig them through the mouth then through the lower jaw, place a 3/4 oz. sinker then crimp. Take a zip tie around the back of the head, gill plates and cinch er down tight.
have a nice fat pitch bait at the ready.

What size are they? Little 5 or 6 inch fingers can be rigged without
a whole lot of prep.
1st break the tail and back bone just like a ballyhoo,
then lay it on a table and with press his head with both hands to flatten
it a little.
Use a 9174 or other short shanked hook, lay it next to the mullet to mesure
the exit point (bottom of the curve).
Make a small slice at that point and insert the hook working the eye up towards the mullet's mouth.
Use and ice pick to poke a hole in the head dead center in front of the eyes.
Now pass your leader (80# mono) through the hole, you will need to hold the mullet upside down and open the gill enough to see the mono through the
hook eye.
Pass the leader through the hook eye and out the bottom of the gills, then slide a 1/2 oz egg through the tag end and prpare to crimp.
Before crimping make sure the hole is dead center of the head and use a bait
knife to make a tiny groove to seat the leader in, then crimp.
Next use floss to tie the gills tight.
Finally make a small slice in front of the hook exit to make sure the
hook has wiggle room.
I used them in FL for sails and they loved them. I even had a blue one
inhale one on the end of a spinning rod on day off Jupiter , 2 jumps and gone.
When they get a little larger than 6 inches they should be split and deboned.
