HOW PAINFUL IS IT?
I'm going in for Septoplasty (roto-rooter up the left side) sinus surgery tomorrow. I've been told it's going to be very painful for several days but, the people telling me this have never had this procedure done.
So my question is, does anyone out there have first hand knowledge about the post-op side of this procedure? When it comes to pain I have a very low threshhold, a real wimp I'm told by the wife. I'll milk it for all it's worth. Any input would be appreciated.
I had that done when I was...12? 13? The first night I slept sitting up but besides that I was back playing pick up baseball games with my friends a few days later. I had a deviated septum fixed while they were in there, too.
Hope all goes well

On a side note, at least now you can get your free T shirt
I just had this done a few weeks ago although my surgery sounds like it may have been more involved than yours. They had to do some work on my bones as well because of many many breaks. The surgery is non-existant with the right meds .... its the recovery that sucks.
I will tell you that it is not fun. You will be fine... and I dont mean to scare you but the 72 hours after my surgery were the most uncomfortable I have ever been. Stay on top of your pain medication even if you dont hurt. What I mean is ... dont wait until you hurt to take the meds. I thought I would wait and see if I needed it and TRUST ME ... YOU NEED IT.
In a few weeks you will be good as new. Good luck to ya!
Never had it done so I can't say. I do understand though that a lot of these facial proceedures are pretty quick healing. I'm comming up on a monster of one. Gonna be under the knife for about ten hours. Was figuring a month but talked to others who said they did it like on Thursday and back 100% at work on Monday...
Been there done that. Fixed a deviated septum as well at the same time. Surgery was fine, post op was fine. It was the removal of all the stuff a few days/week later that was the issue.
Imagine this:
Doc says "we tried something new.we placed some tubes in your cavities so fresh air could get to your sinus cavity and help the healing process. We are going to pull them out now." Cool, Thanks Doc. When I saw him get the vise-grips, brace one leg against the gurney and grit his teeth, I knew there was going to be a smidge of pain. Doctor Rotorooter ended up pulling a 6-8" McDonalds Milkshake Straw out of each nostril complete with yellow/red stripes. No $hit. I saw stars. 4 minutes later when the pain subdued, he said one more thing, now we have to take the "packing" out. this is nothing more than a wad of gauze.
I bit down and up he went with the foreceps. When he yanked, out popped a golf ball size gauze wad. When the fresh air hit my sinus cavities, I almost passed out. Nurse Ratchet was ready with some smellin salts. apparently she's seen many a macho man go down. It was such relief.
Other than that, the surgery was great. Mom had BACON cooking when i got home and I could smell it from inside the car half way down my street. A smell I will never forget!
Had it done a few years ago, deviated septum and more. Worst part is after the 1st day you can barely if at all breathe out of your nose due to the splints and packing. Sleeping in a chair really sucked too and the meds make you stupid.
The good news is it gets better after the splints are removed. The process doesn't take too long and if you take a pain pill before you head to the dr's office it goes a lot better (I did).
Before you know it you'll be breathing and sleeping better.
Good Luck... I have a funny recovery story from mine...
Got home 1st day and was real dopy from all the drugs, in and out of consciousness and woke up seeing my wife with the dog (Long Haired Chiuaha)ass backwards while she was picking the crap off the dogs butt with a paper towell.. I thought I was HALUCINATING... Darn Good Meds... She later told me I was really seeing what I saw...
Don't worry it'll go well.... And you'll do better than you expect...
