    How does your garden grow???

Being that yesterday afternoon the weather here in Wilmington was absolutely beautiful, myself and Miss Squid decided to get to work on our small garden. Unlike most people my age, I take a lot of pride in growing my own 'maters and peppers. I'd much rather tend to them for weeks on end and reap the benefits than go to the store and buy their "pick them when they're green and let 'em ripen in the store" wanna-be tomatoes. We had visited Lewis' Farm off of Gordon Rd. last week but since the weather turned out cold during the middle of the week, we waited until yesterday to plant.

This year's location is a former flower bed beside the house which I cleaned out and found exceptional dirt underneath (once most of the random roots were cleaned out). Twelve tomato plants, four green bell peppers, and four jalapeno plants are now making their home beside the house. Four cucumber plants live in a small flower bed on the side of the yard and four yellow bell peppers and some Castle Starlet flowers (you're welcome Miss Squid ) live beside the patio.

The pictures aren't the best since the afternoon shade had moved across the tomato garden but will post pics of their progress throughout the spring. Also please ignore the "stripes" across my yard----sprayed the entire yard with Round-Up last week and apparently missed a few spots. (There were too many weeds in the yard so I'm killing everything and starting over.)

So.......what has everyone else planted this spring?

Down here we plant in October and right now is end of harvest... I have to grow inside our screened in pool area so its always boxes and kind of small fruit... Outside the caterpillars are bad but its the coons and possums that will see to it that no fruit will ever make it to harvest... They really piss me off with our pinapples. I have about ten growing and they take about two years to grow to pickin size. The ******* critters though get em about three months early...

    You probably already know this
    but
Keep wood chip mulch away from the house.

A couple layers of Newspaper ( yeh, bout all it's good for any more) with grass cuttings on top will keep the weeds and wood eating bugs out. Lets the water in, Rots, Life in the garden is good.

Good lookin plot you got there. You may want to slip a piece of treated 1x 8 or something like that flat against that bottom hardi-plank siding board to keep the mouisture and mites away from the wall. Dirt and siding don't play well together.

We have some lettuce that is just about ready to become a grilled tuna salad - damn stuff jumped out of the ground this year.

Would that be Dukes mayo Nick?

Nice looking garden Squid. I am tilling mine this week and hope to get mine planted this weekend. I don't really want to mess with it this year but I do like picking fresh vegetables. My problem is the herd of deer that run thru my backyard. They discovered it last year and had a field day. I can't understand how they can eat Habernero peppers, Jalapenos, and Cayennes and not burn the crap out of them. They ate the fool out of my peppers, tomatos and string beans last year.

We have a little bigger "garden" than yours. Here is FL, we start planting in Sept. Our season runs through May. The company I work for manages 2 vegetable farms.

Are you gonna be out of town any in June? Don't even think about driving through Chesapeake without a few of those maters in the truck. Pretty spread.
