How Does Your Garden Grow?? 2010 Edition.....

It's getting to be that time again....I started one of these threads last year with progress of our garden throughout the year so I thought I'd do the same this year. Last year everything went really good until a huge rainstorm flooded my main planter with tomatoes in it which promptly killed them. No fear though...major changes are in store for this year to prevent that from happening this year.

It all started on Feb. 21....tilling and loosening up some of the leftover soil:

The concrete bricks shown at my feet in the above picture were laid around the border of the planter which will be shown in future pictures.

Last year we bought plants, however this year we decided to start from seeds. Something about watching them grow from stage 1 seemed interesting to us and we decided to give it a shot. Here's a picture of all our seeds right before they were pushed into the ground:

Miss Squid labeled each row so nothing got confused later on. (This can also be seen in future pictures...)

The following weekend was the major task---installing a drain pipe in the tomato planter so that we don't experience flooded plants anymore. I'm sure there are more simple ways, but I got some 4" corrugated pipe, a couple of drains, and started digging. An hour and a half later, my backyard was a mess and there was no turning back:

Ran the trench all the way to the road and got the pipe laid:

Yes, this was all done with a shovel!

Miss Squid went behind me and covered the pipe back up:

Last weekend (March 5 and 6) was briefly interrupted by SeaBiscuit calling on Sunday morning asking if we wanted to go catch a few seabass....a couple hours on the water and we had supper and then some.

Back at work this weekend (March 13 and 14) installing two more drains to rid the backyard and planters of as much water as possible. First I attached the downspout from the house into another underground piece of 4" corrugated pipe and tee'd it in to the original pipe. In addition, I installed another drain at the corner of the smaller planter (shown in below pictures). The yard itself slopes toward the patio and toward the corner of the planter where I installed the drain. My hopes are that all of the yard water and planter water will collect here and be drained also into the street. (So far, so good!)

On Sunday (March 14), I was faced with 2 cubic yards of compost in the back of my truck which I purchased on Saturday afternoon. Many wheelbarrows later (and with the help of some friends), the levels of all the planters have been increased significantly.

The forementioned drain is showen in the above picture, covered by rocks to keep the dirt out.

And yes, I even got JMS-ILM to work.....better frame this picture!! He did enlist the help of my dog, Trigger and a couple of cold beers to speed the progress.

After the dirt had been spread, everyone left and myself and Miss Squid put up a fence around the small planter to keep our two dogs out when plants go in shortly....

Our seeds have begun to sprout and are really starting to take off. I expect the rest of them to sprout this week and be ready for planting in no time...

This coming weekend the plan is to get another 1-2 cubic yards of compost in order to build the large planter up and slope everything so that the water will run into the drain (covered with rocks in the above picture).

We're also going to be building another fence around this planter to keep these guys out:

    Miss Squid's little terror "Jay"

And my boy "Trigger" who LOVES to help us out with all the yardwork (seen in some of the earlier pictures).

All of his help usually leads to this at night:

I'll be updating this thread each weekend or as necessary throughout the summer, hopefully bringing you pictures of loaded limbs in a couple of months!

Very nice looking soil for Wilmington!
I have pure white sand in most of my yard. I have been conditioning for the last two years with compost. Starting to look good now. The local Starbucks saves grinds for gardeners and are super good for your tomatoes. Just sprinkle around in the garden at it will be absorbed into the soil.
Looks like you will have quite the bounty this year. Nothing like home grown veggies and fresh fish in the summer!!!!

Hey Man, You coming back up to OI this year during PCBT? I began germinating about 2 weeks ago. 40 tomatoes mixed between BrandyWines, Beef Steaks, Early Girls and Beef Masters. 12 each Yellow and Zucchinni squash, 12 bell peppers and 12 cucumbers. Getting a load of topsoil this week as soon as yard dries out a little. I have been pretty bored and just built a indoor growlight setup out of PVC pipe and hanging shop lights to keep my seedlings from stretching too bad. Ready to get it done so i can start to sew my pole beans and snow peas. The older i get, the more excited i get about gardening.

Well we had you a bunch last year but you waited too long so they all got canned or made into salsa. Maybe we can trade a redfish trip for some maters and okra??

Brownie points you say??? You must be crazy! The only way I get brownie points from Miss Squid is to take her fishing! I'll be done with my yardwork in a couple of weeks and will be glad to drive to MHC and hook you up as well.

SQUID.....Now I know you got friends in low places(Tabor City)...what you need a garden for?

Just curious, did you put rock/sleeve around the drain pipe before burying it?

Haven't planted mine yet - maybe in the next few weeks. One of my good friends has been planting tomatoes in hay bales - and then applying miracle grow - It keeps the plants up out of the low spots and has worked really well for them for a couple of years.
