Haven't had a chance to post any recent pictures but here's an update on the garden.
Added another cubic yard of compost a few weeks ago and put a layer of landscape fabric down to help with weeds. On top of that, I put a thin layer of topsoil on both planters. Some of the seeds had quickly grown too big for our small seed starter tray so they were transplanted into a larger box:
Pictured above are 4 squash plants and 2 corn plants. Along with these, I also planted about 40 corn and okra seeds on the right side of the big planter. These seeds have already started to sprout:
Also planted some onion bulbs in the small box planter and they are already starting to come up (look closely in the picture and you can see the green tops):
While shopping for plants a couple of weeks ago, we ran in to SeaBiscuit and Mrs. Seabiscuit who were also buying plants. They showed us some top secret blueberry bushes hidden away in the back corner of Lewis' Farms at the time. They got a couple and we did the same:
If anyone wants one of these, they recently moved the "top secret stash" to the front at Lewis' right by the entrance.
Our tomato plants were planted on the afternoon of Easter Sunday. We planted at the same time last year and it seemed appropriate to give our plants new life on Easter day.
This year we have mostly Celebrity tomatoes, however we do have 2 Big Boy's, 1 Roma, and 2 Yellow Pear tomatoes in the mix. I think there are 19 in all. We're going to add 2 cherry tomatoes in a week or so when the seedlings are large enough to go in the soil.
Today I finished planting the "pepper patch". In here, we have 8 jalapeno's, 4 green bell peppers, 4 yellow bell peppers, 4 red bell peppers, 4 pimento peppers, and 3 lonely squash.
Our herbs are calling ceramic pots their homes this year in hopes of keeping them better separated than last year.
The parsley on the left is leftover from last year while the dill, cilantro, and others are new for the year. The grape vine (still in carton) is waiting its new home in the ground as well.
Finishing up today, I also transplanted the two large corn plants that we started earlier in the year and put them along side of the other seedlings that are starting to sprout.
And planted two Yellow Boy tomatoes in large pots. These are supposed to be smaller yellow tomatoes that we're going to use in salsa toppings for grilled fish.
So far everything is looking good but only time will tell. Anyone else have pictures of their plants/garden so far?? I know I'm not the only one.....![]()
I was big in growin tomatoes for a few years... With Bahamas schedules and stuff I gave it up two years ago. I have to keep them inside our pool's screened in enclosure. Bugs are bad but the coons are worse... They get my pineapples just before ripe time too.
Any way... Was working outside and one of my old planters box has mystery tomatos growing... None last year in it... Just weeds. Can't wait to see what kind these ones will be...![]()
LOVE IT! Might add that I take great pride in my horse manure pile. Any gardener would know what I"m talk'n bout. Lost the garden plot to new area for the Mrs. Netman to ride. Working on new plot soon to be ready for planting for 2010. Talkin about modern tech., recieved Tia (pictured) via UPS 6 years ago to AI breed our mare. Amazing what we have here. Will post garden plot later.
Very cool way to landscape the yard and do a garden at the same time.
Just put our squash, zucchini and sugar baby watermelon seeds in. They have company from peaches and cream corn, jalepenos, romas, spinach and a 3 types of leaf lettuce. I put the cilantro and chives in separate planters as well. everything is sprouted already and looking good so far. Will be culling in the next few weeks.
Still need to call you from your message the other day. probably filled by now.![]()
Everything seems to be coming on great so far. Two of the tomato plants that wouldn't fit in the main planter and were put into pots are growing well:
The herbs which are placed beside them are also flourishing:
Pepper patch is in great shape:
And the squash plants are looking awesome:
Would you believe that we've already got our first tomatoes of the season hanging on? Here's the roma:
And the better boy:
We've had a LOT more blooms but I've plucked them off so that the plant has time to get larger and stronger before it starts to produce fruit.
Some of the other tomato plants:
Planted a few rows of okra and they are going well. Growing a little slow but should take off as soon as the soil warms a bit more:
Some of the original corn didn't come up (I planted it too deep) so I replanted some silver queen and it's growing like crazy!
Finally the onion box is looking good with red, yellow, and white onions:
Another update coming in a week or so.....
