How do you travel with your rods and reels

I have a question because I am looking for a better way to travel with my fishing gear and storing my rods and reels in the car. I have a Suburban and looking for how you all store them in the vehicle and other simple ideas to help protect them better and travel with them in the vehicle. I have looked and tried several rod holder and racks but they are mainly for freshwater rods and reels and just really do not work. I would like something to mount in the roof of the vehicle and wanted to see what some of you all do. Thanks

PM SHUNT he has come up with a way to use Yakima snowboard racks for his surf rods that works like a champ and mount to GMC/Chevy trucks just fine.
He got them from the rackwarehouse. Also put my rods up there the other week for a drum trip. I think he can get 6 rods per rack. This may help

I had a '95 Suburban for years and found the following: transporting offshore rods and reels in a burban is a PIA, plain and simple.
The best solution I came up with will store 6, 30 lb rigs or 5, 50 lb rigs (wides)
Get a metal clothes hanger rod, intert a wooden dowl inside (doesn't have to be a perfect diameter). hang clothes hanger rod on clips in back of burbon. place rod handle between liner and hanger. It will kind of jam in there where the liner curves down by the rear speakers. The weight of the reel will keep the rod up against the head liner. Works fine with stand-up length butts but there is not enough room in the back to accomodate true long trolling rods.
This set up also works great for lighter stuff.

Get a bunch of nylon rings. Big enough for the rob buts and tips to fit in.

    6 rods=12 rings.

    Tie two sets.

Get some small diameter rope but stuff that's plenty strong. Tie the rings together in a daisy chain. leave the rope on each end kinda long.

Use the end ropes to tie it up inside the truck and use the rings to hold your rods. kinda like a hanging cradle. Alternate reels so they aren't banging against each other.

    Viola...good to go.

dolph, i have a pick up w/ a cap but i think the way i do it would work in your suburban also. what i did was i took a piece of 1 x 3 and covered it with some 1-2" thick foam. ilay this across the truck bed about mid way. i then put the butt of the pole against the tailgate andlet the rod rest on the foam. i can line up about 8 rods across the bed and they don't move and the foam protects the finish too.
