    how do you controll

ok captains i got one for ya, last weekend i was out with my kids fishing was tough and bites far between but we managed 5 phins and one snake whoo and boat s started showing up, i had 1 capt call me on the radio and asked if he could setup about 500 clicks behind me on my starbord side we already had fish in the boat and the gent called me before moving in to snatch a few fish with his family.

we were in 250 feet of water and pulling the spread south to where i made the turn and the gent turns with me still keeping his distance, fish only seemed to eat if the spread was way back, so as we turn back north and settle in with a ne wind slapping in 3 to 4s i look out to the east here comes a big sporty with the hammers down running at our direction more towards the other boat. the capt on the cc behind me hollars on the radio about 5 times telling the big sporty we have a long spread out and no return on radio.

this hatt runs through is spread sucks up his lines in the props and shuts down about 500 feet to his port side and drops his spread, well iam in disbeleife of what i saw and the capt in the cc calls this idiot in the big hatt and told him what he did and a few other words went with it and this guy had the balls to tell him to go f#%ck himself he had a party.

i have a very short temper and being an ex seal i can controll myself to a certain degree, but the other gent was going off on the radio. i really think what kept this action calm was we both had our familys with us, if it would have been a bunch of hard dicks in the boats i really think the big sporty would have been boarded or shot full of holes, give me your honest awnser folks.

I completely agree with. There is one charter boat here that is notorius for this. It drives me nuts. He has gotten me twice. The second time I went to his house and confronted him where he said he was sorry and it will not happen again and even paid me back for the lost tackle. But I know he will continue to do the same thing, because once an a-hole always an a-hole

we have a few of these guys up north, only difference is they will not do this untill you are fighting a fish then they cut you off,so you not only lose your tackle you lose a nice fish to boot. Mostly only charters for stripers.

Thats a real shame. You would think as big as the pond is that people could find their own fish... I've seen this with charter capts. as well as recreationals and even the commercial boys. You can tell what kind of experience these guys have from their actions. I think I would have to confront him at the dock and let him know what kind of ass he is,preferably in front of his party!

If you know he did it on purpose, and with a resposne like that its simple...

Hook a rope to the cleat, a downriggerball to the rope, and do the exact same thing to him...

I always tried to give people their distance when on the water. I'm not going to crowd anyone for a fish, it isn't worth it. Finding your own is a little more rewarding. Next time you see him coming drag about 300 ft of old rope out the back, secure it to your boat with some light mono and let that get in is running works.

All that does is put the burden on the poor mate. After all, THE MATE is the one that will have to go into the drink to clear the wheels. Deal with the CAPTAIN DIRECTLY and leave the help and his vessel out of it. NEITHER have control what the a-hole is doing.

Stupidity is an equal opportunity employer and idiots are everywhere.

Once I learned this simple principle, I now have a better understanding of how things happen and why.

I agree that trying to take revenge on the water is a bad idea and can end up with very bad results. I would have taken down the charters boat name and port and presented the bill for the lost equipment to the Capt or owner. If they refuse to pay, there are recourses that can be taken since they are a business. And in this case, you had a witness that certainly helps your case.

Last summer I was trolling the Norfolk Canyon when a big 55 foot plus SF on plane comes within 15 feet of my bow. Of course this throws up a giant wake and tosses my crew around in my 29 foot boat. Talking about open ocean here, no other boats in site, nothing restricting his course. I hailed the Capt and asked why he had to come so close. His response was I should have moved out of his way. I told him I was trolling a 10 line spread and was not moving anywhere too fast. His response was he had the right of way so he was not going to change his autopilot course. I told him if he wanted to play the rules of the road game with me, since he came from my port side in a crossing situation that I had the right away. He told me he had the right away because he had the bigger boat.

OK, it was then I realized I was dealing with an idiot and there was no way I was going to make him not an idiot over the radio and let it go.

Mike, I had a similar thing happen inside Hampton Roads, just off the Naval Base, about 20+ years ago. I was in my private vessel and was put in extremis by a commercial vessel from Hampton. He had not responded to repeated radio calls on 16 and 13, but after the near collision he came up and told me that I should have gotten out of his way because he was bigger.

I choked down my initial reply and simply said I would be seeing him again. When I did it was at the hearing called by MSO, Hampton Roads after my detailed complaint. His boat was bigger than mine, but my Merchant Marine License was bigger than his.. More importantly, he was in the wrong, and I had excellent documentation. His license was suspended for 90 days.

If (when) it happens again, make good notes of the time, location, weather, vessel headings, your actions, vessel identification, and use that video camera of yours. Then make a formal complaint to the Marine Safety Office. They do not take these things lightly, and follow-up is usually good.
