I haven't had much luck catching ballyhoos for bait but heres how I do it. Get a couple loafs of bread (cheapest I can find) oatmeal works too. Chum up the water with one of my Navy issued laundry bags full of bread. I use a small spinning outfit with 4-6# line, size 14-16 hooks, a chopstick, and some rubberbands.
I rubberband the chopstick length wise to the line it acts as some weight to help cast and acts as a bobber plus as an added bonus it is the same color as the bread and seems to attract some hoos. Once I start to see em coming around I use a little ball of bread on the hook give er a cast and reel em in one by one putting them in a ice chest full of brine. I dont have a cast net but figure I get better quality baits without it. I work nights so on my nights off I go to the marina under a light illuminating the water and start working. How do you do it? Got any tips on bait type, hooks, or place to find em. Hardest thing for me is finding them. I need tip so I can catch more.
