    How deep is my planer??

What methods are ya'll using to know how much line you have out on the planer rod? Do you mark your line....go by "feel" or just have planer ESP Reason I ask is I have the planer out...let it creep a while...reset....repeat. Then when I get a strike I am guessing at how deep the planer is because I just don't know how much line I have out.

Second, anybody know the line out/depth ratio of the Old Salty's? I know the #24 is about 1-1...how about the #12 and #16 Thanks for any tips. Greg

I mark my braid with a sharpie and note on the side of the reel with tape the depth. Especially important for BFT. For meat i start off with 30 yds off the reel and let it creep 10 to 15 minutes max. Trip check for grass bite offs etc. Then start all over or send down to mark on my line where i got bit.

A #24 with 200lb solid spectra is about 2-1. For every 2' you let out, you go down 1 foot.

First mark is 50 next is 75 then 75 foot increments after that. I let out slowly after planer grabs and sets till mark is at water surface level then push drag up.

Isn't the depth also dependent on your trolling speed?

    I.e.: Wouldn't a #24 planer go deeper at 5 knots vs. 7 knots?

NO PLANER IS.... NOR CAN BE... 1:1

THEY HAVEN'T MADE THAT CAT YET....

JUST START YOUR PLANER SORT OF SHALLOW25 FT UNLESS YOU ARE MARKING BAIT DEEPER....IT WILL CREEP DOWN REGARDLESS.......THE WAHOO AND WHATEVER ELSE WILL CERTAINLY SEE IT IF YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME.....AND THAT SIR IS THE REEL DEAL ON THIS SUBJECT

Box I understand that and I let it creep through the column. I just needed tips on how to know how deep (or how much line I had out). Maybe I need to pay more attention to it or use the line marks because as I get involved with other parts of the spread I can't keep up how much is out with it creeping an inch or 2 at a time. So, the fish hits....I'm in the right place....but I don't know how deep I am unless it hits early on when I am only 25-30' deep. I think marking the line and keeping up with what comes off so i can go right back to the strike depth is gonna work the best for me.

Thanks for the input guys and Box thanks for the time you put into some great how-to videos on the bridal rig/sniper rod.

WHEN YIOU SET YOUR PLANER DOWN...TRY ADDING A #16 RUBBER BAND TO A SPOT ON THE MAINLINE NEAR THE PLANER REEL....AND IF YOU GET A BITE....BINGO...IF YOU LET IT OUT ANOTHER 20' ADD ANOTHER BAND
