Just curious, Box or anybody else have an idea how deep these baits are running on Box's planer setup??

Captain Rich, I'm not sure what you are asking here, are you talking Bluefining or when he is meat fishing. When he runs it meat fishing, he will start it shallow, 10' or so and let is slowly "creep" down for 5 to 10 minutes or so. With the "sniper"planer rod system and a # 32 Old Salty planer, you can reach depths of over 100'...![]()
Capt. Lee- any estimate on how deep a 16 Old Salty will run?
75ft would be my educated guess. they will all run deep, just depends on how much line you have to let out to get them down there.
one other thing. the old salty planers are so much easier to trip than that sea striker ones. a planer full of grass 75' down that does not want to trip can be a real pain in the ass

Thanks Lee- I was looking for that kind of answer, the Old Salty site says the #16 will go to 200', the #32 to 250', but in the real world taking into account forward boat motion and water resisitance on the line I was wondering how deep the bait was actually running. When I striper fish and troll wire line spoons, or braid line and stretch plugs, I know how deep I am because I will grab bottom every now and then, but how can we really know when we are canyon fishing???
I have wondered the same thing.
I have always thought the line angle was about 18 to 23 degrees, give or take depending on speed and planner size etc. So I laid it out using an Architect scale.
Also, the amount of line that you have out going to your bait behind the planer depends on how deep it runs. The more line that you have out, the more the planer will raise up.
Ok Rick, a little help to the algebra challenged, if I measure the line (with a line counter) going to the planer, and I know the angle (22.5 degrees) how do I figure out the depth? Also the angle will vary depending on the size of the planer and line, how can you measure the angle when on a boat (say the first time you are using a particular planer).
