    Hooks

In an attmept to get back to fishing topics...I am always interested in the hooks people choose to use. So, tell me what kind and size hooks ( and manufacturer number if you know it) you use for mahi, wahoo, tuna, etc.

I realize it may be in the back pages, but to be honest, I am too lazy to look and a new topic is warranted to give us something to do other than read the thread that will not die.

I use either the 7691 or the 7732 for tuna and mahi.

If im doing wire I'm using the 7731 needle eye.

whites and sails I used mostly the eagle claw 2004el

On the subject, does anyone have much experience with Mustad's 7761?

I mostly use 7691 these days - 7/0 & 8/0 for most of my meat fish rigs.

I still have some rigs with 7691S, but I'm weaning off them, as they seem to bend out of shape - I've probably thrown a couple dozen away over the last couple years because they were bent...

For circle hooks, eagle claw as well...

A long time ago, I used 7731s, but the hookup ratio was much poorer than with the 7691s...

Use Mustad 7732 for all pelagic species. Never had a problem and has a great hookup ratio.

QuickRig baby! I have opened too many Mustard hooks... lost a wahoo 2 weeks ago that took 1/4 of a spool off an 80w in one run, then - gone and the hook (12/0 7732) open. QuickRig are on average 60 % stronger than the next strongest hook.

Marlin -Small Lures - Hays Hook 8/0, 500# cable rig behind 300# mono
Marlin -Medium Lures - Hays Hook or Southern & Tuna 10/0, 500# cable rig behind 500# mono
Marlin -Large Lures - Hays Hook or Southern & Tuna 11 to 14/0, 900# cable rig behind 650# mono

Wahoo - Front hook Dr. J, back hook Southern & Tuna 0 degree offset 10/0, 500# cable rig 2ft long (no need for longer)

Tuna -Small lures - Southern & Tuna 9/0, 200# mono

Mahi - whatever comes to hand at the time

Sorry about that, I am the dumb one for not explaining -

Dr. J hooks (QuickRig) are the 7732Mustad equivalent, just your regulation open 'J' hook that does not have the recurve point back towards the eye that the Southern & Tuna (7732 style) does.

    I use 7692's 8/0 & 9/0 for meat fishing.

And 7731's 8/0 & 9/0 for wire rigged hoo baits.

I run all my baits either *****, with witches, or Ilander in front and use med ballyhoo 99% of the time.

Try an Eagle Claw 7/0 circle in front of a chugger or a *****. It is an easy way to get the feel of circles when the mahis are around. I used to be scared of the circles but after trying them & learning how to use them they are great. That is all we are using here in Florida.
