Holden Beach Kings and Small Gags, w/pics

I headed to the sharkhole today with Sam and Sharon of Semora, NC on their 28 Mckee Craft in search of kings and grouper. The plan for the day was to catch pogies, then teach these great folks a little bit about fishing. Unfortunately, we were unable to find bait, so we headed on out with cigar minnows. We hadn't been fishing long when the medium surface rod went to screaming. After running off around 200 yards of line, the fish bit throught the wire. It wasn't long however when the same rod went off again. 15 lber in the box. 20 minutes later, the same rod again. 20 lber in the box. Okay, the bottom looks good, let's try something different. First drop yielded a 22" gag, second drop was it's twin. Two fish busted us off, then the grouper bite shut down. We did end up catching a few grunts, and had the light line go off once, with the hooks pulling. Just one of those days. The weather was beautiful, the company was great, and we had a few fish in the box, what more could we ask for. I'll be commercial fishing over the weekend, so I'll let you guys know what we do.

Jer, thanks for that. Jay, they are still there. It probably would have been a better bite if we had pogies, but you never know.

Lyndon,

There were plenty of pogies right on the beach between the condos at caswell and ocean crest. We threw one time sunday and loaded up. Didn't see but one bird diving but there were a bunch of pelicans just sitting around watching the flips.

Jay, it was the same for me on Monday. Just east of Lockwood, there were 2 acres of bait flipping. Yesterday, I ran all the way to the hothole, and saw nothing.

Cappy Lyndon,

Nice catch on a bad moon.

Are those pyramid sinkers on the bottom rigs? I guess I'm not much of a bottom fisherman, but I've done my share and never used pyramid sinkers offshore. Surf fishing, for sure, but not offshore. I'm sure you have a good reason for using them. If you don't mind, I'm curious to know the advantage??

Thanks.
