    Holden Beach Commercial Mackerel Fishing

Today I went commercial king mackerel fishing with my good friend Capt. Ryan Williams. We went straight to the tower, and as soon as the drone spoons hit the water, we had a double header. We had a pretty steady pick of 4-10 lb. mackerel for the rest of the day. The grand total was 78 fish, and 478 lbs. As long as the water stays over 64 degrees, the excellent king fishing will continue. Most folks think the king fishing is over by thanksgiving, but it is just getting good. As far as numbers go, our best fishing is late fall/early winter, and then again in early to mid spring. Tired of cabin fever? Give us a call, we have the perfect cure. I'm hoping to make at least one more trip before Christmas, but if not, I'll be back at it right after. I'll keep everyone informed as to what is happening.

Sounds like a good day. Did you have a chance to do any bottom fishing while you were out there?

Some of the best days I've had kinging have come in the winter. The kings just move a bit further offshore, but usually within 10-12 miles of the tower.

I was referring to Frying Pan Tower - I used to fish out of Southport...

I don't know about Diamond Shoals - Haven't been up there in a while.

Robja, no we didn't take the time to do any bottom fishing. We king fished until about 3:00, then came on home.

The winter bite can be great. The fish all gang up real tight on the offshore structure and it is nothing on some days to put 9 or 10 "boxes" in the pit.

Most of the time they're not the big smokers everyone is looking for, but the numbers of fish can be staggering.
