    Hog Tied Mahi

So im not a Box "poster" but i am a Box "observer"......and i hope this is worthy.............

So, i just got my new "early release" issue of In the Bite..and im flippin through and i stop on the tackle tips......

First of all lets just say the Knotty girl..... i would love to see that girl rig a palomar knot with acrylics.....

on to the next page...hmm..very nice, double hook wahoo lure - Red and Black...my favorite colors............WHAT THE...

you have got to be kidding me - Now ive heard of hog tyin hogs....but hog tyin mahi!!!!......i was so intrigued i had to read on.

they say - once gaffed CAREFULLY (yeah right) hook the barbless J hook in the mahi's mouth and then bend the tail - quickly wrap the cord around its tail and then close the snap swivel. he wont move.......well first of all most of the time when you get one of them suckers in the boat they fly off the gaff and start freaking out..........Geezus h hiest!! isnt it just easier to gaff and box the sucker...IMO thats just way to much work....

Now ive had some Bull's that have almost flipped the fish box lid over the transome...and there have been times that ive had to put a 250lb man on the lid just to keep it closed.....but really??? is this serious.....i just dont see the point

So here is the question, and no disrespect to the tip.......but what is the most pointless, confusing tip or idea you have ever heard?

In my opinion this one is right up there with the best of em....

When I was in Guatemala several years ago when it got close to lunch they would change the speed on the boat and we would catch 5 or 6 Dorado. When the fish was next to the boat they would take a bat and hit the fish on the head and stun it then haul it over the side and hog tied it. No flipping out in the cockpit and no blood to wash up. The mates had it down pat. They would then take one and clean it and cooked Dorado burgers for lunch. Except for fresh sushi they were hard to beat especially with the fresh guacamole

Because when you put them in the box and they hit the ice they go ape sh*t and beat the crap out of the fish box or cooler and bleed all over the place

no really....I didnt know that...... But okay i see..i get your point......so your saying for the sake of a clean and bloodless fish box you would spend the extra effort and hog tie a mahi.......

personally i still think its a little over the top...but to each their own...

They do it in CR too- it's actually pretty slick. They're really fast at it. The cool thing I've seen is they whip the fish on board, wrap the tail, open the swivel, remove the leader, grab a new leader all rigged up with a fresh bait, toss it on the swivel, close it, and toss it back out.

The whole thing takes seconds and they're fishing with a fresh bait again and they don't have a fish flopping around, nor are they trying to unhook/re-rig...

Shoe is right. I remember one boat I was on in Quepos did it too. They were super fast. just seconds and it was done and we were back fishing. They would hog tie the fish and leave it on the deck till they got the bait back out. Then put it back in the box

Raquel, the Costa Rican mates seemto have this down to a science but I'm with you on this one, its over the gunnel, into the coffin box, close the door, and deal with the hook and leader later.
