Hey Box Please Help, Planner Question

Alright Mr. Box man I got a question for you about the sniper rods. I see that when you rig the planners you always use a 80w. If I go out and get another rod and an 80w my wife might leave me.

I do have 2 Tiagra 50w lrsa's and 2 50# 6' bent butt rods that I can use. Can I use a smaller planner to make up for the smaller reels and still get the same kind of results from the rig. And will a 6' rod be to long for this kind of set up. We would be mainly going after YFT and Hoo's

Thanks for any help you can give. Haus

no 50's will not cut it they may pull the same drag but check out the drag washers on a 50 and an 80 after time the 50's going to slip thats just my opinion

You will be able to pull smaller planer. Maybe up to a #6 but, you will need another shorter rod. If you want to pull big planers an 80w is almost standard.

LOL

Really is amazing how much pressure those things can put on a reel. You really have to witness it to believe, but once you see it in action you will see exactly why an 80 is absolutely necessary. It will just tear the shit out of a 50, ramped up drag or not. I also agree, you will absolutely need a shorter rod as well. Think of bunker spoons, you can swim them with 20 different rod reel combos to cut a corner, but they just don't quite perform the way intended. If there were ways to save a few bucks, and use different equipment, Box would be here in 2 seconds telling us about it. I am going to my first planer setup this year too, and had the same questions, but after seeing it, it was clear what I needed.

now i am not picking on anybody here, but it is funny how this question comes up every other week or so. same format, and same equipment. i can say i have made two of the smaller set-ups work using 50-80lb class bent-butt full roller rods, 50 wides, with a wind-on bridle that dawgiestyle sent me about eight months ago. the set-up works great for what it is, but a number 8 or 12 planer is the max and it will never achieve the performance of the true planer rod. you see spoken here on this site so many times of the catches of the real planer rod set-up using an 80wide, and see the pictures also, the results should speak for themselves. keep in mind that you have some extra junk or fu-fu stuff laying around you can put up on ebay for money towards the "reel deal" planer rod.

When i finially got to fish the SNIPER SYSTEM it amazed me, we had the 80 tiagra almost pinned and it still was slipping drag.
A 50 might hold it but it would burn the reel up for sure after a while.

For smaller planers, you're 50 will work fine...and the rod you have will work also as long as you can get to the tip. This by no means is to say that you can replace a true planer rod setup...BUT what you have will work.

And the best thing is..........you ALREADY have it! Use it and save money for that Sniper rod and 80 Tiagra. In the mean time have fun catching on the planer!

like i said, you can get by with the 50 set-up but don't plan on putting down a 16 or 24 planer with it. also bear in mind you need to reach out enough to grab the line to unclip the planer. just scrimp and save wherever you can until you can go with the full-bore set-up, it isn't cheap to set-up.
