Since you want to save your relationship with the Mrs, and you already own what you want to try---- I say go for it. Worst case scenario, it doesn't work well but you haven't spent a dime and then you have a really good excuse to whine, beg and make life miserable until she finally tells you to go out and buy the new toy you really want

    Try one of these:

    http://www.boatersworld.com/product/478650518.htm

We use 'em all the time. They're great. You cleat off the planer & attach the fishing line to the planer via a rubber band. When fishy hits, the rubber band breaks, & you fight the fish sans the clunky planer.

GOFSHN REALLY SUMMED UP MY THOUGHTS HERE

HAUS,..... THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION IS HERE IN THE ARCHIVES OF SFC....I ALSO ENCOURAGE THE MASSES TO GO BACK INTO THE PAST AND DO A HISTORY SEARCH HERE IN SFC ...THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE LIBRARY WE HAVE HERE!!...ONE THAT MANY SPORTS WRITERS OFTEN READ AND USE OUR VERY OWN CONTEXT IN THEIR WRITINGS.

I AM ASKED THIS QUESTION OF YOURS EVERY WEEK OF MY LIFE ....AND TRUST ME...I DO NOT MIND THE QUESTION.....

YET, I HOLD MY GROUND TO THE EQUIPMENT AND TERMINAL GEAR I USE ON TRUE SNIPER ROD/BRIDLE SYSTEM...THE ABSOLUTELY DEEPER METHOD ....THAT ONE I HAVE SO PROUDLY USED FOR MANY YEARS......

I HEAR THE SAME EXCUSES FOR NOT HAVING AN 80 TIAGRA FOR THE SNIPER SET UP......#1MONEY .... #2 I ALREADY HAVE A SECOND HAND PIECE OF CRAP AND WILL IT WORK?.....#3 MY WIFE WILL DIVORCE ME ....AND CAN I CUT CORNERS WITH MY 50 ...OR MY 14/0 SENATOR....?????? HELL YES YOU CAN CUT CORNERS!!!! AND YOU CAN ALSO CUT DOWN ON THE AMOUNT MEATNDABOX AS WELL !

HERE IS MY ANSWER TO ALL THOSE OUT THERE IN SUCH DIRE STRAITS ON MODIFYING THE SNIPER SET UP .....

IF YOU HAVE AN 80 PENN....THEN SELL IT....SELL THE DANG THING AND ROLL THE MONEY OVER TO THE 80 TIAGRA!! AND UNLESS YOU ARE BLUE MARLIN FISHING....YOU HAVE NO BIZNESS FISHING AN 80 INT PENN....PERIOD!!!! PULLING AN 80 FOR MEATFISH IS ABSOLUTELY OVERKILL IN MY O-P-I-N-I-O-N........

THE PURPOSE OF ME SHARING MY MANY YEARS OF TRIAL & ERROR TO FIND THE HAPPY MEDIUM IN THE WORLD OF SNIPER ROD FISHING....AKA PLOW BAIT FISHING...IS TO BRING YOU THE BEST ...MOST SIMPLE AND MOST PRODUCTIVE FORM OF DEEP DOWN KILLING...

WITHOUT A DOUBT...UNEQUIVICABLY......I HAVE DONE JUST THAT

ALTER IT? SUBSTITUTE IT? ......GO AHEAD.....AND BE YOUR GUEST...I MEAN BE MY GUEST ....PROVE TO ME ME WITH SOME YEARS OF PRODUCTIVITY YOUR METHOD.....PROVE TO ME ON FILM AND AT THE DOCK THAT ANOTHER METHOD IS MORE EFFECTIVE........AND I WILL EAT CROW.

I DOUBT THIS IS THE ANSWER YOU WANTED TO HEAR....BUT I HOPE WHAT EVER TECHNIQUE YOU END UP WITH.....YOU WILL GET MUCHO MEATNDABOX!

The next bite on a jig.
    Just an observation:

I have the standard setup as everybody else. 80 Tiagra mounted on a short broomstick. It works, got Kelsey her first Hoo on Saturday.

However, the rod itself is so stiff, you almost can't see the bite. I used to use a slightly lighter rod, that was up to the heavy duty use, just not the right guide set up.

It got a nice bend in it and you could see the bites much better. I never spent 10 minutes pulling around a snake king, or peanut dolphin, that you didn't know was on there.

My next custom planer rod is going to be just enough lighter, with the proper guide set up, so I can actually fish it.

This is only MY way and not suggested to be the only way.

Very good point, I noticed that in almost every planer bite the rod was pretty much the key to seeing the bite. Theres so much drag on that puppy that you probably wouldnt here it peeling off line, thus it seems that seeing the rod action is a critical point in this set up.

I've done that deal. Standing there with my hand on the shaft so I could feel the planer "tink" and start cranking before it even comes to the top. Sometimes on pretty days you can hear it.
