    HEY BOX! HOW 'BOUT...

A QUICK LESSON ON TOADS. LET'S SAY YOU CAN PULL 4 LINES WITH A 5TH COMING FROM BEHIND THE CONSOLE ON A CC (SHOTGUN). SHOULD THE TOAD BE PULLED FURTHEST BACK ON THE SHOTGUN... WITH TWO SKIRTED 'HOO'S OFF THE RIGGERS (OR OUTER LINES). ON THE SHORT CORNERS, I HAVE BEEN PULLING MURADERS (SOMETHING DOWN 10+ FEET). GOOD SPREAD, OR ARE THINGS OUTTA WACK?

FOR THIS YEAR, I AM WANTING TO ADD ONE OF SQUIDDY'S BARS OR CHAIN TO THE MIX, JUST TRYING TO FIGURE THINGS OUT WHILE KEEPING THE MOST HOOKS WET.

ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. (AND I'M NOT YELLING, JUST THOUGHT I WOULD SPEAK YOUR LINGO).

    THANKS!

GALZIO, Im not BOX but I thought I would add my half a cent worth. Im not sure that more is better in your case. I think that you need to fish a managable amount of EFFECTIVE baits. If the crew has a hard time handling five baits then fish four. If they can handle ten then, fish ten. Make sure that by adding more you arent moving baits around and puttting them places that they might not be as effective just to get another line in the water. You can fish one bait effectively and out fish ten baits that arent being fished properly. Now you talked about marlin. If we are talking white marlin I would stay away from spreader bars and skirted lures. I would consentrate on naked ballys and skirted strip baits. If you are fishing blue marling then you are on the right track with skirted hoos, but keep in mind that a blue marlin is a bad mother and with out the proper tackle and fighting skills you could be in for more then you barganed for. As far as Im concerned Maraders and sreader bars are tuna fishing stuff. If fish alot of squid chains, actulally I dont usually go fishing with out one in the water, but it is a teaser and has a naked bally on the back. I hope this helps.

dont know about the toad, but with the marlin and the spreader bars, i have to "disagree" with pitch bait on the spreader bar, if i am fishing for any kind of billfish i want one spreader bar off the bridge in the middle of my spread, and put naked and ballys with king busters on them, a lot of times i have had marlin come up on the spreader bar then i drop a flat line back with a kingbuster thats the same color as the spreader bar. just my 2 cents

Need to chime in before the bar gets blown up like some well known kitty cat from a different thread. These are only my OPINIONS and the OPINIONS of a few others that I hold in high regard.

First - since we are talking billfish here lets pull the shot gun way in. No "way backs" needed. Not because it is not effective. But more so because it is difficult to hook one from way back there. See I think that most people will tell you meat, meat, meat for billfishing but won't explain why. It's no secret that plastic raises more billfish then meat or else no one would pull teasers. Hell life would be easy to hop on a boat and pull 4 dink baits to catch billfish. But rarely does that happen. Check out what all the meatlovers deploy first when billfishing.

    1. Dredges - Full of either meat (mullet or ballyhoo), or Rubber shads or strips of, wait for it......................PLASTIC STRIPS WITH FISH PICTURES TAPED on to them!!!!!

    2. What goes out second - Squid chains or some cases bars BUT NOT HOOKS. or big lures the size of tld 25's that create showers and spray and bubbles and blah blah blah. WHY do we pull all this crap. Well because they raise the fish. Don't get me wrong I feel that a properly rigged spanish mackeral may be the best white marlin teaser there is but the typical rec guy is not going to bring along more then 1 or 2 macks and they do wash out quickly.

Now for the business end. Naked Dink ballyhoo with a 7 or 8/0 VMC or eagle claw circle hook on 60-100lb test leader with a 75lb swivel. Done, end of story. Why? because if presented properly these billfish weather it be a 40lb white, 25lbs sail or 400lb blue will come off a teaser and attack that little ole ballyhoo like it is their last meal and you will have a beautiful uncluttered hook waiting to find the corner of that billfishes mouth. If you are in an area with lots of blues maybe try a med/lg bally with the #8/0 circle hook.

Billfishing isn't unlike the bar scene - You tease em in with the plastic (gold cards, amex, visa etc) but you get the job done with da meat
