Here's your content! Sailfish set up (trolling)

Here's my first thread on W2MW. Hope it helps you out.

I've been fishing off Palm beach the last couple of weekends. I've had limited time when I've gone out so I didn't live bait, I trolled. Live bait rules but if you like trolling heres my set up.

I use shimano TLD 25's and Accurate Boss reels with one shimano bait caster spinning reel to pitch to tailers. I use 20 lbs test high vis mono, wind on leaders with 60 lbs floro leaders to the hooks.

    The spread.

I fish 5 rods and 2 teasers. short and long riggers are ballyhoo's mostly on circle hooks. I've been using the Owner SSW 5179 or Eagle Claw L2004ELF and floss rig with the X in the head. I've been using a 3/8 oz sinker cause of the wind. The baits have been swimming great but you might try a 1/4 if its calm. I've been fishing the baits super close to the boat so your long rigger is where you would normaly put the short riger. and the other baits are just outside of the wash. I really only fish those four baits and then free line a ballyhoo when a fish is on the teaser or after we hook up. I almost always leave one bait out as we fight the fish. I'm in a CC so we do most of the fighting from the bow and keeping a bait in the water will give you at least 1 more fish per day. We fish a three man team, 1 on the wheel, 1 fighting the fish and the other watching the baits. You would be surprised what happens to your baits as you're all looking at the sailfish jump.

Teasers- I've been using a homemade daisey chain of flying fish or ballyhoo with a chugger on the first bait and silver mylar skirts on the others with a ***** bait as the trailing bait.

You could use ballyhoo or mullet dredges but I usuall don't have enough time to get those ready (arrive friday night late)

We've had a lot of success fishing just inshore of the live bait guys so if they're in 155-165 we've hooked up in 145 ft. I'll also see where they set up there drift and as they push north I'll try to get in and work there drift path. We did really well the other day just fishing under the Man o war birds. We ran to them and swung the rigger baits under them and killed the dolphin.

Pay close attention to where their kites are and their baits. A lot of times they're flying multiple kites and you don't want to get to close. If you stay out of there way and they see you catching multuiple fish on dead bait they'll give you your respect.

Don't trust the weather man. Just go. We fished in 8-10 ft seas with 20 knot winds 2 mondays ago in a 28ft CC and had no problem. The swells were really far apart and it go increaingly better as the day went on.

I'm sure I missed some of what we do and nothing is new to some of you but this should get you started.

PM me if you want any more info. or bait spots. Hope this helps if you're heading down to Palm beach. I'll be back down on the 13th so if you're going to be there let me know.

Appreciate the post and hope the winter FL bite treats you well.

Even without pictures, I can see the floss X in my mind and have already rigged a dozen baits this morning!!
