    help on gps

Any suggestion on the best and most user friendly GPS on both hanheld and stationary. I currently have a Furono 1650 and before that I had a Lorance can not remember the model number. I think I liked the lorance the best. Also appreciate any suggestions on a hand held VHF radio. thanks jack

I have to second the Garmin....simply can't beat the usability, and the Bluechart chips are great! Accurate as hell, and very detailed.

A friend of mine has a Raymarine and he wants to get a Garmin now after fishing with me and seeing it in action (after having used his) LOL.

Handheld I can't offer advice on, because I too am in the market for one LOL. But I'll be listening to those who post!

    Zipper,

I had a furono gp-30 something. Was not uses friendly at all. Just recently got a garmin 182c. I can actaully tell where I'm going now!!!!! Was very easy to set-up, and is super user friendly.

I have 2 GPS's on my boat- 182 and a 185. They are both user friendly. The only thing that I would change is that I would spend the extra money for the 182c which is a color unit instead of gray LCD.

The Scalawag had Furono 1850 when we baught her. Wish we
had the Garmin because the Navionics graphics are not that good.
The Nav mode and accuracy are fine , and waypoint entry and selection are user friendly. I just wish the charts were better.

I've got a 182 c color and a furuno downstairs.I have the furuno set up to read loran and the garmin set up for lat and long. The 182 is the fastest unit I have ever used.Pay the extra and go color,It also can be set up as a bottom machine but I didn't set mine up.It can also be hooked up to your pc for loading charts, waypoints and routes.Bottom line is its a great machine.

This is what I would like to do as well, get an inexpensive Furuno GPS/Loran (not chartplotter), and set it up to show Loran. Then, with my 182C, I'd be set up for both numbers, AND have a backup.

You simply can't beatthe Bluechart software, as I said before. It is as close to reading a paper chart, as you can get You're not looking at a "strange" screen, it's like looking at a quality color paper chart, but on your screen, and with zooming capability and detail that can't be surpassed.

    Guys,
Just so you know the loran number the GPS will show are not accurate. If you want loran you're better off picking up a used unit off e-bay.
