What are your computers specs? You will, as Marty mentioned, need a a fast processor, lots of RAM and a big HD to do things quickly. There is really way too much crappy editing software. The learning curve can steep, depending on what you want to do. IMHO, adobe and sony vegas are the best. Basic packages are not that expensive. Best of luck!

Vegas pro and adobe creative suite are scarey, but that's what you need to work with HD in 1080i or 1080p formats. Sony cams/footage really work best with their vegas programs. My company has been working with adobe/final cut products for years, so that is what we know best, but the vegas suites really have some kick ass features.
