Myself (Boneshaker) and Cpt Kenny Brown left the Hatteras Harbor at approx. 6am to do a little meat fishing up to the east of the inlet. It was the last day of the HVOO and Kenny's dockmate and eventual winner Marv on the Wired Up was holding down first place. The ride out was less than ideal and we were only able to make about 25knots in a confused sea. Once we hit the blue water we deployed our spread of sea witches/ballyhoo combos on 100lb fluoro.
Trolled out past the 100 fathom curve without a single knockdown. Over an hour without a bite and I was starting to worry. There was a lot of grass, but it was not made up unfortunately. After trolling east for a long time, Kenny pointed the boat back toward inshore and we were in the process of putting line on one of the reels when the port short rigger snapped out of the clip. The fish was taking drag and since no splash was seen I was thinking tuna. That thought evaporated quickly when off the port side of the boat a huge marlin was greyhounding rapidly past us. That is really when the panic set in. With only the two of us onboard I was trying to clear the lines, drive the boat, and take pictures. Just a note: the throttles on an Everglades are a little touchy. I think I only threw Kenny out of the boat once...maybe twice. Sorry about that buddy!
Anyway after about two hours of chasing we were on top of him but getting the last 100 feet of line back proved to be the hardest. After having the leader 5 or 6 times we got her boat side and swam her for 15 to 20 minutes before releasing her. We were so beat I think we were both hoping not to see another blue that day. Hooked her in 60 fathoms at approx 75 degree water.
Ended up trolling back home and picking off 6 decent gaffers for the dinner table. Made it back to the dock at around 6pm to find out that Wired Up held on for the win. Congrats to Marv and his crew. Pretty work.
Kenny we need to enter one of these marlin tourneys one of these days. Thanks for the big time fun.
Hope everyone enjoyed the report. Sorry about the pictures. Maybe I should stick to driving the boat.
