I know Capt. Archer said he think it should work, was just curious if anyone has tried it yet. I know most of the striper trollers catch the fish several hundred feet from the boat, so i was curious if the TOAD would bring the fish closer, and if it would be worth booby trapping.
What color should it be? Does it need painting? is it worth putting in the water for other trolling fish? cobia, amberjack, king macs, red drum ?
Tyson- I'm not sure about the toad, this is the first year I have used it. I will say the first time I used it we had a banner catch, coincidence??? I used it a number of times, I think it may be more useful offshore but I'm still playing with it for the stripers
I don't see it for stripers.Visibility is only a few feet in that dirty water. Most fish are caught lower in the water column I dont think they would know its there.Just my thoughts I certainly could be dead wrong.
What dirty water???? I don't know... visibility, vibrations, lateral line sensors, but something was working (karma?) It was a pretty good striper season.
This is what i would think would be a major help. If it brings the fish in through your spread, to get to the teaser, it could be invaluable. Thats what i feel would be its best asset if that is what it does. Do you think you would have done as wel without it?
You know I really agree with Fin and Razor, it shouldn't work. But the first time I used it, and scored so well, the rest of the fleet didn't catch that day. Now I know the rest of my charter fleet knows their stuff, so what made the difference?? Yes I fished a little different area, but I don't think that mattered so much. I think the toad got some fish interested that really weren't aggresively feeding. I used it the rest of the season, but most times the stripers were pretty active, so I couldn't tell if it made a difference or not. It didn't interfere with my trolling spread, the customers liked watching it, so why not??? It wasn't much use when we anchored up and clammed It kind of reminded me of Wilson in the Tom Hanks movie, just kind of sat there and watched us!
check the archives from last year, there are a few Toad threads re: painting them and how to rig them. i think SeaBiscuit or someone posted up some good pics of how to rig them. also, Shoefish posted up some good video of his Magic Toad in action.
i thought it worked well when we deployed it for first time last year but i cannot say it increased fish in the spread, at least from our experience up North of DMZ.

Toads work. On everything. Fish "hear and see" through their lateral lines and sound travels far and fast underwater. That wild thumping that a Toad does calls fish from far away and way down deep. That great striper catch was no coincidence. Always troll one and you will see.

And I don't get a damned thing out of saying that.
