Has anyone ever used on of these? What did ya think?

My buddy's father in law passsed away 4-5 years ago and he left a shed full of fishing gear. My buddy has sold some of the stuff and he showed me this contraption the other day.

I know its a sort of battle station, but I have never seen one on a boat. Have any of you? And did you like it? What are some of the disadvantages and advantages of it? How much would it be worth if it is in tip top shape?

    It's a Stand-up Fighting Post

For small boats without room for a fighting chair...Similar to the Arrigoni: http://www.arrigonidesign.com/samspost.htm

    This looks like yours: http://forums.floridasportsman.com/f...ni-samson-post

Value? Hard to say--I've seen them from $250 to $750. Try eBay.

I have a friend that has one on a 30 ft regulator. They modified theirs some. They love it. I have never used it while fishing with them though so I cannot tell you the pros and cons of it. I do know the lady that uses it won't fish on her boat anymore without it on there.

My mentor had one on his shamrock, slighly modified(braces stern and bulwarks), but otherwise a handy tool if your into the big bluefin or marilin game from small boats. We used this until we started true standup fishing, but it was still nice on days when you should have stayed at the dock. Just insert rod and start cranking, no BS just trying to stand up. Wives and kids appreciated it at well.

I have seen them before up on the bow for guys doing makos, big tunas and the like on CC's. The ones I have seen are made in Italy, I think they target bluefins mostly

I've seen them both bow and 'pit mounted and used one a few times down in Venezuela. Kind of a cool alternative to a chair, takes up a lot less room, costs a heckuva lot less money and the ones I had experience with could be easily removed if that's what you wanted. I think many anglers would really like these things if they tried them.

While on the bank I had the misfortune of picking up and cranking in a 50# outfit to clear the spread with a couple of white ones hooked up when a monster yellowfin nailed my rig on the way in. The folks I was fishing with were focusing solely on billfish, so this tuna was viewed as a pest to be eliminated ASAP. I was young and strong at the time, but that big tuna beat the heck out of me while I was trying to get him in quick. They had one of these battle stations that I didn't need to fight the whites and sails that we were catching, but I switched from pure stand up to it after getting "beat in the (tropical) heat" and it made a huge difference. It let me get that tuna coming in my direction and one of the guys did a great gaff job as it crossed the corner and we got it.

Long story short, I consider it one of those great fishing tackle devices that very few fishermen know about or use...kind of like those Hays Handles, yet another simply wonderful invention. Oh well! Comes with the territory.
