    hand line planer

i searched my ass off trying to find some stuff on handline planers and i found a bunch of good info here on SFC. one thing i didn't find was a good way to store the whole setup when it isn't being used. i know there has got to be some type of reel or something out there that will work... but where can i find one? i can only find 7 inch diameter leader storage reels and i dont think that they are gonna cut it. does anyone have an idea or way of storing the old hand line planer? i think i am going to run 100 or so feet of 250lb mono and 8 feet of 3/8 rope so it will have to be a decent size. i am looking for something simple because i ain't always to smooth in the pit. so come on with the methods b/c i know there are other poor(cheap) dudes on this site who don't have 80 tiagras for their planers. by the way when i hit the lotto next week i am gonna go ahead and get 2 tiagras. haha... make that 10 tiagras!!!

thanks in advance guys. this site kicks ace!!!

You should store it on my boat.

Speaking of which, I picked up my boat today!! She started up without any issue!! It was awesome! Now I just need to fix that short and get a new fuel tank!

I use an empty line spool. Right now mine is an empty Berkeley Big Game spool.

First I would use braid off of the rope, smaller diameter will go deeper then the mono as well as take up less room on a storage wheel.
Check out Capt Joe's fish finder tackle site, he sells the whole set up ready to go for much less then tiagras

ichecked out joes site. nice stuff and exactly what i am looking for as far as the reel goes. but i only need the reel. i have everything else all made up already besides a decent way to store the line. i will look into the braid for sure. but i already have the mono all rigged up so i am gonna try that first. im gonna email joe to see if he can hook me up with the reel only + a few of those sweet looking lanterns. thanks for the help guys. keep the ideas coming if there are any different methods.

I use the top part of my 5 gallon bait bucket like a big leader reel. I clip the bottom snap to the bucket handle and wrap the line around the top grooves of the bucket until I get to the top section and then I use a short bungee to keep it in place. One downside is that I can only hang baits on the inside of my bucket and be sure to wrap the planer line well enough below the notches cut to hold the lure hooks. Also, I tried the mono first and quickly decided to go with braid which performed much better for me. Alot of satisfaction in trying you own thing and making it work for you. Best of luck to you !

Keep that mono to string your duck decoys... you will hate that mono when you have trouble popping that planner! Switch to braid buy the whole thing @ Capt. Joe's it might save you a big fish...

You will find that reel listed as a " YOYO" in several different tackle supply sites.

Capt. Joe's rig looks good, but isn't the braid a little hard on the hands when retrieving?

Not at all if you trip it first. You are asking for trouble with the bigger planers like # 32's . Gloves are a must if you want to keep all your fingers. I would recommend running them off a good strong downrigger. With the downrigger it is alot easier to adjust your depth to what you are picking up on your sonar.
