can't believe it..
left the marina at 4:30 with the rest of the fleet fishing the Scssa tourny, headed out in choppy conditions, aborted following the fleet and opted for the softer ride.
got to our spot 30 mins before lines in,rigged everything and waited for the lines in call, not looking good we are all alone the rest of the fleet is south of us,well first pass between my 2 sea mtns and bam a dolphin, hmm maybe this is going to work out ok after all, everytime i passed this spot we got a hit, ended up with 1 BFT,1 wahoo and 5 dolphin off of no mans land,we had 2 brand new jobu 7/0 hooks break right at the bend,1 was a wahoo(pretty sure because we had a couple of cutoffs at the same time, the other was a nice bull right at the back of the boat)well we decide we need a monster dolphin or hoo to get on the boards so we head deeper,we head out and find another dolphin on a weedline in 300 ft,spin around and start trolling the weedline, see a grey pod of something and pray its dolphin, nope blue fish and we have 2 hooked up,in the box they go for future Mako bait.
get the spread back out and continue down the weedline all of the sudden i hear, fish on wtf, wtf,Bob the planer is gone...wtf don't mess with me,i turn to see no planer rod in the gunnel,WTH happened, then the short rigger pops so loud, you here the clip release before any drag gets pulled, the rod gets a bad bend in it with no shakin or twitching,i immediately say thats the planer setup,i pull back on the throttles and kill the motors while we reel everything in and slowly bring in the short rigger,as it gets closer we have a fish on,no wait thats 130lb mono, not 30,its the planer leader, easy does it the hook just barely caught the line, anyway 1 person has one side of the leader and the other has the fish side, then the 3 swipe gaffing goes on,finally i have seen enough,i just wrap the leader and flip the 15 lb bull in the boat then i beat the hell of of him with the bat, while the crew slowly brings my avet back from the deep, yep we got the rod/reel and the fish...i am still shaking my head..
well the day is not over yet...so another 1,5hrs and nothing so lines in,we clean up and start to head in,set the auto pilot and away we go,as we head in i am watching the GPS,we're traking sideways,WTF,look at the compass and something is wrong...scratching head...about that time i see 2 boats coming in from the north and we are going to cross paths(not good we are heading more NW than w)anyway i take off the auto and reset it,still not right so i take over..
anyway we clear the rocks head in to the weigh in,not so fast there bob, your day is definately going to get interesting...we stop for a pee break and i feel the steering is binding up bad, just as i come off plane it locks up will only turn to the starboard a 1/4 turn, can't turn to port at all...WTF now is wrong...we are running out of time for the weigh in,call my marina and advise of my situation,a friend who fishes with me heard us,he was in the harbor,he runs over picks up the angler and the fish, they head to the weigh in in a 18ft scout... anyway we call seatow, they say 30 mins to get to us,then 1 of the crew says "does the auto pilot work?"hell yes what a great idea,i use it to get to the marina and then use the motors to back in the slip...the day is over..Thank God...
but it could always have been worse, like the guy at the marina that had a hook in his heal,it took a pair of my vise grips to get it out....
what a weird day it was....
