Well Marty I donated a guided duck hunt too. 2 unlucky.... I mean lucky victums are going to get to come up to the famous Currituck Sound and get a free duck/swan hunt (lodgeing not included). So you hunters on this board make sure you go the Barta boys and girls tourney and bid up. Remember this is for the kids. If you have kids under 16 and you want to have some real fun bid on this hunt and I will take them during the Youth hunt they save for the end of the season. last 2 years they put it after the main season was out and the ducks nice and calm. Last year my youths shot 47 1/2 boxes of shells in one day. They had a hunt of a life time. They wont be able to take a swan if they hunt the youth day because the season on swans goes out at the end of jan and the youth hunt is in FEB. So bid until your heart is content and good luck. mike
Blasting Swans???
What on earth would you do with those mean buggers? I got into a fist fight with a canada honker while standing in thigh deep mud last year. I'd imagine swans could be real pesky if they don't know they're dead. That honker took a while to figure it out...
Lets see... I shoot him at 30 yeards with a 12ga 3" mag. He fall 90 feet head first into a pile of clam shells on top of mud. I hit him with my best hay makers when he stood up as I was gonna grab him. I wrung and broke his neck and when I got home and opened the cooler he was ready to go for round two! Slammed the lid on his neck and set a car battery on him. I still hear thumping comming from the freezer some days
So do you eat swans or just blastem?
Deep-- too funny-- maybe you should stick to critters w/ scales.-- little ole goose opened it's can of whoop ass on ya, did it? My son got in his first wrestling match with a crippled goose in a corn field-- boy won-- he was 5 yrs old--
The Swan thing is more of a trophy hunt. IMO they taste like mud and mussels, but we eat what we kill-- fortunatly have had to only endure 2 Swan dinners.
Swancaller, you are assured of at least 1 bid next weekend
Thanks buddy.
That sob had the advantage. I was stuck in the mud so I didn't have my fancy footwork on my side. Big bird as geeses go...
That rubber necked ******* could sure take a punch! Threw my best stuff at him and still came up looking like I had just gone a couple rounds with Holyfield.
I CAN NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH ON THE BEHALF OF THE CHILDREN OF EASTERN NC FOR YOUR GENEROUS DONATION OF TWO CUSTOM BUILT SWAN DECOYS ALONG WITH THIS GUIDED HUNT!!! YOU , "OCNSLR" AND "CATHOD"........HELPED KEEP MY FUND RAISER FOR THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB IN VA BCH FROM BEING A DISASTER..................
Deep C you must have had 2 baked swan dinners I bet the dog would not eat it. The breast is medium dark red coarse meat. It is not as coarse a bear but more coarse than deer. It shoul be sliced thin and then tenderized before chicken frying it. It is good in a crock pot also. The thighs should be fried like chicken they are the best part and it is very good. A lot of people do kill them for mounting. You can only kill them in a very few states and NC is the only one that you are almost always get a permit. they issue 5000 permits a year. Va does 600 and not sure if MD still does it. The entire population in the eastern flyway migrates to NC each year there are scattered along the east coast but most of them will be in Currituck, Pamlico, albemarle sounds. Most of my hunters get 2-3 chances a day to bag a swan. most people that have never shot one need those chance. These are not your back yard pond swans with the pink bill with a black knot in the middle. These birds have black bills with what looks like a bright yellow tear on each eye. They average about 15-25 lbs for mature adults. 99% of the people who hunt them have to call them by mouth hence the login of Swancaller.
That was Glenn W that responded abouteating them. I hunt Jersey and we get swans show up from time to time. Mean buggers from what I can see. I figured since I got whipped by a goose so bad I could really get drilled by one of those ! They show up and the other birds go to the other side of the river. I've often wondered about shooting them but in Jersey its a no-no. Was also wondering about eating them and you answered that nicely... Thanks...
Sorry C got you mixed up. They are really wimpy nothing like a goose. when the dog grabs them they just lay out and do nothing. If I can figure out how to post a pic I will show you one that is alive being retreived and looking at the dog the whole time.
Swans are exiciting to hunt-- ever see a squadron of B52's with their landing gear down at 40 yds?-- right impressive sight. I swear the ground shutters when they hit.
Caller, If you don't mind, what is your "normal" guide fee so we do our best to get more than that for the Charity.
