Good Things Happen to Good People

    Modified: 8/10/2009

The title of this report is going to be GOOD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE ! I was taking David Granitzki, Rick Eby, Scott Kiss, and Andy Variano out for bluefin tuna and sharking on Saturday, when one of my buddies (I now consider him to be a real good buddy), tipped me off to a new "fishy" area for tuna. What made this very special was the fact that it was only 22 miles off of the beach instead of the 50 miles that everyone else is wearing grooves in the ocean heading for! So off we went to check it out at 3:30 in the afternoon. When we hit the zone the bird life was going off so I knew this was good information and we started trolling. That only lasted for about a minute because I started reading fish right on the bottom, so I hit the brakes, had the trolling lines brought in and told the crew to start jigging like crazy. Five minutes later Dave "Hot Rod" Granitzki had the first tuna on, next time he ought to check his drag before he gets a tuna angry! About a half hour later we get his fish on board. He starts fishing again and again hooks up, don't ask me what the other guys were doing, they might as well have gone for lunch, Dave was the star here. Anyhow Dave hands his rod off to Scott and we are off to the races. Scott brings his fish in and now we have our over/under and I'm a very happy camper! We then hung some shark baits out to soak while the crew kept jigging. I tried to explain to the charter what we would do if we got a shark on, ie rod handleing, wiring, gaff/harpoon, big bang/calm shark, but I never got past the 2nd sentence because the shark lines kept going off! Final score 4 brown sharks and 1 blue shark. During all of this the boys were jigging skipjacks, anchovys, squid, and bluefish. The boat got trashed! In the morning we went back on the troll, but the readings weren't as good as the night before and with the wind picking up I decided to pull the plug and head for home. We were back at the dock by 9:30 in the morning and then had to deal with the trashed boat!
