With the tax season winding down, and the expertise of knowing how to file extensions, I decided to join my friends Scott Erickson and Mike Becker for a trip to the gulf stream on Good Friday. The warmer water seemed to be further south so we decided to head to the Same Ole in hopes of loading the boat with some tuna and wahoo. The Same Ole had a chilly 67 degree water when we arrived, but we put out the lines anyway and within 5 minutes had a tasty black fin tuna in the boat, Trolled the area for a while longer hoping that we could entice some of his buddies to take the ice bath ride back to the hill without any success. The satellite weather service on my Garmin showed a temperature break further offshore, so we finally found the 70 degree water in 500+ feet. We were soon rewarded with a 45.15 lb wahioo on the planer rod.
Had his bigger brother hit the WWB rod and was making an impressive reel screaming run only to give us a jump , show us his size and bite through the mono leader. The seas became glassy and the bite shut down so we joined the jigging fleet at the break. Scott pulls in a keeper cobia and his first African pompano. I managed to get a 38 lb cobia for the grill. Hope to get a you tube video of the wahoo fight posted when Scott makes time in his work schedule to get it uploaded.
